JUST ONE MINUTE

The book of Job is a deep examination of the question of suffering. Why do bad things happen? Why is there suffering at all? Why do the good and innocent suffer? Job suffers the death of loved ones, financial loss and bodily illness to an extreme, yet his deepest suffering is that he feels as if he has been abandoned by God. He speaks from this gaping wound and experiences God’s response. God is present, loving and faithful in suffering. We see in Jesus that God is especially present to us in our suffering. This is a profound biblical truth that our suffering is not a barrier to God’s nearness, but actually a call to deeper tenderness from him.

Reflection: How do you experience God’s nearness or distance in suffering? Does the biblical truth offer any wisdom for you going forward at this time?

Óscar Romero (1917-1980) was archbishop of San Salvador during El Salvador's brutal civil war. He was critic of unjust military and government actions and a vigorous defender of the powerless and the poor. After calling for international intervention, he was assassinated March 24, 1980, while celebrating Mass.  His canonization was celebrated by Pope Francis on Oct. 14, 2018.

We’re trying to control our budget and pay off debt. My husband brings home $3,400 a month, and thinks we should set aside $200 for a date night once a month. Under the current circumstances, I feel like this is too much. What do you think?
