The word Ghana means warrior or war chief and was the title given to the rulers of the original kingdom. The Empire was located in the area of present-day southeastern Mauritania and Western Mali.

"If we want to more deeply understand the roots of climate change, we have to go further back in time to the origins of slavery. Shift of European powers to the Caribbean, Africa and South America changed the climate through plantation agriculture and forced migration of people," says writer Ekow Eshun in his interview with multi-award-winning artist Alberta Whittle. His talk was to promote the Somerset House group exhibition: 'We Are History', (ended 6 February 2022) and looked at the interrelations between today’s climate crisis and legacies of colonialism and racism.
