 Center of the Month:
National Hispanic & Latino MHTTC

The National Hispanic and Latino MHTTC is located in Bayamon, Puerto Rico and housed at the Universidad Central del Caribe. The purpose of the National Hispanic and Latino MHTTC’s School Mental Health Initiative is to build and expand the capacity of school-based services and improve the implementation of mental health services to deploy appropriate safety responses and needed supports for Hispanic and Latino students. The Center aims to provide technical assistance to AWARE grantees to implement culturally and linguistically responsive school mental health services for Hispanic and Latino students and families.

Christine Miranda, PhD, the MHTTC Project AWARE Liaison from the National Hispanic and Latino MHTTC, presented at the February 2022 Project AWARE Office Hours session to share about the training and technical assistance opportunities currently available through the population-focused Center. You may access their K-12 School Mental Health Program here.

Please reach out to your designated MHTTC AWARE Liaison if you have questions about specific TA or training needs for Hispanic and Latino students. Your MHTTC AWARE Liaison will coordinate with the National Hispanic and Latino MHTTC to respond to your needs.

External Resource Spotlight:
Children’s Mental Health: Understanding an Ongoing Public Health Concern

This report is a collaboration of the CDC with other federal agencies including the Health Resources and Services Administration, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and the National Institute of Mental Health. It represents an update to the first ever cross-agency children’s mental health surveillance report that was published in 2013 and a valuable resource for the work we are doing to support the well-being of children and families.

The new report found that poor mental health among children was a substantial public health concern even before the pandemic. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and anxiety among children of all ages, and symptoms related to depression among adolescents, are the most common concerns. A summary has been posted on the CDC website that includes a link to the report.
