Greetings to all FNAWNees, friends and associates of FNAWN:

Welcome to our FNAWN e-newsletter Volume One 2022, as the Australian literary festival season is now well underway and with restrictions having all but now lifted right across our borders and nations, gleefully we are now re-entering the physical space of attendance, readings, and performances which are being held right around the country at literary and writer’s festivals. FNAWN are very excited with upcoming announcements on sponsoring literary events, promoting FNAWNee speakers, performers, book launches, and poetry readings at the cultural interface of Australian literature and publishing. As such, FNAWN will be attending the Adelaide Writers’ Week from the 5th – 10th March. FNAWN will be podcasting with some of our emerging, career established, and award-winning poets, writers, and storytellers with their shared thoughts, ideas, and visions for the love of their craft. Watch this space!

FNAWN are delighted that Writing NSW have extended this offer to our FNAWN Members; Membership of Writing NSW gives you discounts on their courses and other programs, as well as access to some of their member-only programs like publisher open days. If you would like to take up this offer, please let us know and we will put you in touch with the good folks at Writing NSW.

FNAWN & ASA Partnership

The First Nations Australian Writers Network is proud to be recognised as a partner organisation of the Australian Society of Authors (ASA). FNAWN members receive a 40% discount on ASA membership fees. The ASA is the professional association for Australia’s authors and illustrators and has advanced and protected the interests of writers and illustrators since 1963. For over 50 years they have been providing advocacy, support and advice to Australian creators relating to their professional practice. One of the great achievements of the ASA was the successful campaign for Public Lending Rights and Educational Lending Rights, which provides payments to creators for works in libraries, as well as the foundation of the Copyright Agency, which has created an additional income stream for many writers.

Reminder to Members

Throughout 2022 FNAWN has exciting members-only activities planned for the year, so please make sure your contact details are up to date, and that FNAWN emails aren’t going to your spam folder. We trust that those of you who took advantage of our FNAWN bonus e-gift from November to December 2021, have received your books up to the value of $50 from our good friends at Booktopia. FNAWN branded face masks are out in the post – why not send us your best FNAWN mask selfie when you receive it. FNAWN will also have plenty of extra FNAWN face masks to the Adelaide Writers’ Week.

Good News

Congratulations to FNAWNees Charmaine Papertalk Green and Sue McPherson for being recipients of 2021 Magabala Books Mid-career Fellowship.

Short-listees in the Adelaide Festival Awards for Literature include members Nardi Simpson (Song of the Crocodile), Tara June Winch (The Yield), Ellen van Neerven (Throat), and illustrator Dub Leffler (Bindi. Text by Kirli Saunders).

Two FNAWN members feature on this year’s Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Notables list: Sally Morgan (The River. Illustrated by Johnny Warrkatja Malibirr), and Karen Wyld (Heroes, Rebels and Innovators. Illustrated by Jaelyn Biumaiwai).

A special mention to non-member Veronica Goorie for being awarded the prestigious Victorian Premier’s Prize for Literature and Victorian Premier’s Prize for Indigenous Writing for her book Black and Blue.

A FNAWN shout-out to BooksnBoots crew, including our Director John Harding. BooksnBoot were established in 2015 as a response to the growing demand for books in First Nations’ rural and remote communities and schools. National studies have shown that a child who is assisted by parents at home in reading, and read to, not only begin learning earlier but have a more thorough understanding of the elements of literature.

FNAWNees, we’d love to share your good news in the next e-newsletter, so please let us know via email firstnationswriters@gmail.com
