Thanks to Mandy Dance for updating the Lafora litter screening results. In the Autumn 2021 quarter, there were 62 litters of Mini Wire puppies. All of these were "safe" for Lafora. This is the first quarter we have been able to report all litters as being safe. Year-to-date, 98% of litters were safe.

Pandemic puppies - research study - can you help?
If you bought a puppy in 2021, please support this new research by the Royal Veterinary College. The results will be compared to similar surveys in 2019 and 2020 to determine whether the changes in puppy buying in the UK seen during the pandemic are still present, or whether behaviour has returned to pre-pandemic levels.
Dr Rowena Packer, Lecturer in Companion Animal Behaviour and Welfare Science at the RVC said: “The pandemic led to changes in the way the UK bought puppies during 2020, due to the many restrictions to travel and social contact during this period. Many of these so-called ‘Pandemic Puppies’ became much-cherished companions, helping households cope with lockdown life; however, there are concerns that some owners were duped into buying from unscrupulous breeders.
“We are interested in whether pandemic-related changes in puppy buying persisted into 2021, so we can best support owners of puppies bought during this period going forward. We would love to hear from anyone who purchased a puppy during 2021 to share their experiences.”

Can you help with some IVDD research?
Nia Ball is a final year student studying BSc (Hons) Veterinary Nursing at Harper Adams University.
Her final year research project is on intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) in Dachshunds and seeing whether there is a link between weight and recovery time. She is looking for responses from Dachshund owners that fill the below criteria:
•Have a Dachshund that has suffered from IVDD in the thoracolumbar region (thoracic/lumbar)
•The Dachshund has had a hemilaminectomy (back surgery) in the past 3 months or more
The information you provide is completely anonymous. Please answer all questions honestly. Participation is voluntary and by starting the survey, you are consenting to taking part but you can withdraw at any point until submission of responses. I would be very grateful if you could complete my survey linked blow, it should take no more than 10 minutes to complete.
