What's New at BHCLA?

Elder Dugger presents No Mystery
Billie Holiday's Elder in Residence, Elder Dugger gave a Black History presentation at Sankofa Children's Museum of African Cultures. His presentation, "Black History is No Mystery," celebrated and uplifted ancestors and current Black Historical figures. For Dugger, "My story, your story, and our story is the wonderful story. We as Black people, have endured, persevered, strived, and achieved. " 


Billie Holiday Center presents 2022 Helena Hicks Emancipation School
Join the Billie Holiday Center and faculty affiliates starting April 6th, for a timely Black Studies webinar series, designed as a cluster of introductory "mini-courses" on Black culture, and historical and contemporary issues affecting Black freedoms. The mini-course format involves a 40-minute presentation, followed by 20 minutes of Q+A. Register

The 19th Annual CITYLIT FESTIVAL 2022
CityLit Project presents the 19th annual CityLit Festival, a live and virtual, fully reimagined signature event. The celebration for readers and writers aims to continue the ideas of elevating the literary arts in this region. How We Break Free: Confronting Hard Truths is the underlying theme of the month-long event that boasts three live gatherings. Learn more

The Winston Tabb Special Collection Research Center searches for Public Humanities Assistant

Celebrating the Royal Theater 100 years later
James Hamlin, BHCLA community partner and founder of The Royal Theatre Community Heritage Corporation (TRTCHC), hosted a public remembrance outside the Avenue Bakery to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the opening of the legendary Royal Theater. Called The Douglass Theatre when it opened on February 15th, 1922, the theater was built, owned and operated by Black business owners. The TRTCHC wants to rebuild the theater, razed in 1971, to restore pride and revitalize the West Baltimore community. Read more about this event here. 

Special Feature: Exploring Black Baltimore's Community Murals

Students in BHCLA's "Arts and Social Justice" course explored the cultural history of West Baltimore's Black pride murals with Elder Charles Dugger and Mama Deborah Mason, Director of Sankofa Children's Museum of African Cultures. Capturing the triumphs and struggles of Black peoples from African antiquity to the present, these walls of pride use art and aesthetics to inspire social change. Racial Justice Concert Series: Dan & Claudia Zanes
March 10th, 1:00pm: Join RJCS for Grammy-winning guitarist and vocalist Dan Zanes and Hatian American music therapist/jazz vocalist, Claudia Zanes for a performance in support of the Baltimore-based Black Church Food Security Netword. The performance will be livestreamed via YouTube from Baltimore's Creative Alliance. Learn more here.

Abolitionist Research: A PhD Professional Development Career Workshop
March 11th, 11:00am: Join the Program in Racism, Immigration and Citizenship with PhD, Senior Research Associate of the Vera Institute of Justice, Dr. Jack Norton for a discussion of how his PhD training has informed his current research on rural jails. The event will also focus on the challenges and rewards of working as a full-time non-academic researcher for a think tank and advocacy organization.

March 15th, 4:30pm: Join the University of Delaware Library, for a hybrid book signing and talk by Dr. Tara T. Green, author or Love, Activism and the Respectable Life of Alice Dunbar-Nelson. New Exhibition - Men of Change: Power. Triumph. Truth
March through August 14th: Explore the Reginald F. Lewis Museum exhibition that profiles the revolutionary men including Muhammad Ali, James Baldwin, Ta-Nehisi Coates, W.E.B. Du Bois, and Kendrick Lamar- whose journeys have altered the history and culture of the country.
