ecoBYTE // March 2022

Hello <<First Name>>,

2022 is gaining pace, as exhibitions and sound walks start to take shape.

MARSHES SOUND WALK BOOKINGS NOW OPEN >>  The much anticipated and long-planned Maliyanga ngurra/ Macquarie Marshes Sound Walk is going ahead on 21-22 May, with the itinerary finalised and bookings now open. Places are limited, and with a few already indicating interest, I wouldn't hang about if you are thinking you'll come. Details including a map and a downloadable itinerary, plus a list of things you need to take note of, are on the ecoWALK page of the website. Please read these before you book. Highlights include the artist talk in the MOSSES AND MARSHES exhibition at Outback Arts, a pub dinner that night, before heading off to the magical Marshes for a full sensory experience the next day.

AUSSIE NEW YEAR'S DAY MAKES LONG LIST IN INTERNATIONAL WRITING COMPETITION >> Over the summer I worked on a few creative projects, including texts for a writing competition through Walk Listen Create (WLC), the online home of walking artists from across the world and their Sound Walk September festival. The brief was to write a (flash) story or poem of 250 words or under about Walking Home. WLC is publishing an illustrated chapbook anthology in April of the short-listed pieces, as well as producing an audio locative podcast and geo-located sound walk. During Sound Walk September this year, the shortlisted authors and poets will be invited to read their work. My prose, New Year's Day, was long-listed...we'll have to find out if it was short-listed. Read the other entries and see if you can pick the who will make the cut.

EASTER OPENING OF MOSSES AND MARSHES >>  For those who have an opportunity to get to Canberra over Easter or during the end of Term 1 school holidays, put MOSSES AND MARSHES at M16 Artspace on your itinerary. I'll be in Canberra to install the week leading up to Easter, with a private opening on Thursday night, 14 April. It's all systems go for this exhibition now that Andrew Howe's works have safely arrived from the UK.

INHALARE STAGE 2 UPDATE >> The Inhalare/breathe upon Stage 2 artists are underway with visual responses to the soundscapes and texts they were provided with a month ago. The updates of works in progress, and in one case a finished work, have been varied and so very interesting. Keep in mind the Stage 2 artists have not been allowed to visit the sites where the Stage 1 soundscapes and texts works were made, responding to and interpreting these natural environments from the soundscapes and texts alone...with a little creative licence applied to the brief. The final Stage 2 works are due 30 March.

Vicki Luke (Albury) in response to Anna Glynn's work from Jaspers Brush, 30 Minutes of HeavenThe soundscape is heavenly to experience. I wanted to engage with the complexity and beauty of that work and incorporate Anna’s beautiful words.

Clementine Belle McIntosh (Gilgandra) in response to Dr Greg Pritchard's work at Wagga Wagga, The Rocks...it is nice to think of how far the water has travelled and the significance it holds to many artists.

MORE ABOUT INHALARE
ABC RIVERINA/ NSW COUNTRY HOUR WETLANDS STORY >>  I did an interview with Olivia Calver from ABC Riverina over the past month about the Sonic Territories project work I have done in the Galari/ Lachlan catchment, in particular the Great Cumbung Swamp. It got a play on the NSW Country Hour on 14 February. The real story was about the soundscapes of Nap Nap Swamp put together by Charles Sturt University and The Australian National University, but I had a chance to talk about something I love as well.

Sonic Territories: Galari is a project that took seed during an artist residency at the CORRIDOR project, near Cowra, in 2020.

EOI SOUGHT FOR A SOUND WALK OF THE WAMBUUL/MACQUARIE RIVER >>  A new project is brewing and I'm after indications of interest in a performative artwork/sound walk of the Wambuul/Macquarie River towards the middle of this year, possibly around June. It'll only be for about an hour and may be best suited to those who live close by. I'd love to hear from anyone interested by dropping me an email.
