Dear Parents, Caregivers & Friends of the College
Firstly, thank you for your understanding and cooperation over recent weeks with restrictions and requirements forced on us by Covid-19.
Currently we have over 10% of our students who have reported as positive cases of Covid-19. They are all self-isolating with their whanau for a 10-day period, or longer if symptoms persist.
Thanks to all of you who have notified us of your sons' status and those who have kept sons at home if they display symptoms. Please continue to advise us so we can record numbers accurately and mark their attendance accordingly.
Next Monday, senior students remain learning from home whilst Year 9 and 10 are expected to attend school. We will review this on Monday with a decision made on schooling for the remainder of the week dependent on the availability of staff. We will update you on our planning on Monday afternoon. The rationale for this programme is that our senior boys are more capable of engaging in online learning for an extended period of time. Our juniors benefit significantly from regular face to face contact with their teachers whilst also benefitting from the social interaction in the classroom. Having Year 9 and 10's at school also ensures parents and whanau can continue to work without the requirement to supervise their young children at home.
I can assure you that we continue to maintain the appropriate Health & Safety protocols at the school to minimise the spread of Covid-19. Our boys have been very compliant with the expectations, mask wearing etc. and I would encourage you to ensure your son attends school when he is expected to.

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR

Kia ora koutou,
We trust you are all keeping as safe and well as you can in these trying times. This message is to update you all on the process we are undertaking recruitment of a new Principal for Tauranga Boys’ College.
The Board has engaged the services of Blackcat Education, a recruitment company who specialise in the education sector. We will be working alongside them to identify suitable candidates for this crucial role.
We started the process today, by inviting our teaching and support staff at the school to complete a survey that will give us insights into the characteristics they think are important in our new leader. We would also welcome your comments, as parents of our young men, as to the type of individual you think we should be looking for. We will take into account all of your comments in order to make the best informed decision.

We recently farewelled two long serving staff members from Tauranga Boys' College:

Mr Bruce Gillard
40+ years at TBC, Mr Gillard joined TBC as a Teacher in the Science / Biology department.
In 2007 he was appointed to the position of Assistant Principal, Timetabling and Principal's Nominee for NZQA. Over the last 15 years he has been a valued member of the Senior Leadership Team.

Mr Rob Sperling
Mr Sperling leaves us after 33 years at TBC. He joined the college in 1988 teaching Workshop and Tech Drawing. In the early 1990's he established the F5 transition module assisting students with employment skills. This progressed into the Academy Programme, GATEWAY, STP and STAR. Mr Sperling was also heavily involved with sports at the college including Rowing, White Water Rafting, Gymnastics, Kayaking and Rugby and retains his Teacher in Charge of Kayaking role in 2022.

CANOE SLALOM
Congratulations to Matt Jefferies who competed recently at the CSNZ NZ Open gaining a Bronze Medal in the Men's K1 U18.

FUTSAL
The Senior A and Junior A teams embarked on what could potentially be the only competition for the season on Sunday 27th February. The Tournament was held at Hillcrest High School and both teams were excellent ambassadors of TBC, making it through a long and hot day of futsal.
The results were:
Junior A:
vs Hillcrest HS 2nd's: 10 nil win
vs Napier BHS: 2 all
vs Rototuna 2: 13 nil win
Vs Ham BHS: 3-1 win
Top qualifiers in pool play
Final against Hamilton BHS 1: 1-1 at full time - 5 min extra time gave TBC Junior A the opportunity to clean up the match with them converting 5 unanswered goals to finish unbeaten and Tournament Champions at 6-1
Senior A:
1st pool game up against the Hamilton BHS senior A squad. HBHS started strong leading 2 nil halfway through the match but TBC came back strong finishing the game with a 5-3 win. The 2nd game was Hillcrest Senior Prem squad and TBC won 3-1. The 3rd game was vs Rototuna who were also unbeaten and the winner went to the finals. It was a hard game but controlled well by TBC with a 3 nil win to make the finals.
The finals saw us face the Hamilton BHS 2nd team who topped their respective pool. In what was a display of control and precise futsal, TBC soundly secured the win 6-1 and were, like the juniors, the Tournament Champions.
A great day of futsal for Tauranga Boys' College.

NATIONAL ROBOTICS
Congratulations to Year 10 student Nate Wadsworth who (along with two Otumoetai College students) won the Tournament Champion title at the NZ VEX Robotics Championships on 20th February, as part of the STEAM-ED Robotics team. Although they were officially in the Middle school age group, all age groups were mixed in together in the event. Partnered up with a team from Lynfield College they had a very successful day, playing another STEAM-ED senior team (Mount College students) in the final and ending up as the National Champions.
The Nationals was split into two events to adhere to the 100 person limit. .
Nate and his team’s outstanding performance has qualified them for the VEX Robotics World Championships in Dallas, Texas, USA on 3rd-5th May 2022.

FUTURE PATHWAYS

PATHWAYS
The Pathways Department is coming through the transition to new staff strongly.
Mr Tom Collin has taken on the role of Future Pathways Advisor having joined us from Kapiti College down south. A new booking system for making Pathways Appointments is available via the student dashboard and parents are welcome to make appointments via the Pathways section of the school website.
In the coming weeks we have visits, either physical or virtual, from a number of New Zealand’s major universities, and we are always on the hunt for job opportunities for the boys; particularly part time work and apprenticeships.

GATEWAY
Gateway has also been blessed with new personnel to replace long term staff member Mr Rob Sperling.
Mrs Maryann Grainger has taken on managerial responsibilities and Mr Bradley Smith is now the Gateway Supervisor. Please see either of these spirited staff members if you are interested in getting work experience.

MĀORI ACHIEVEMENT
Any students interested in a Cultural Camp, organised via Service IQ, are encouraged to make contact with our Gateway co-ordinator, Mrs Maryann Grainger.

STP
All STP students have had their first day at Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology in their chosen pathway.
At the college they have nearly completed the perimeter fence of the compound where they will be constructing their garden shed building projects.

WEDNESDAY CHALLENGE
Tauranga Boys' College staff and students are right behind the Wednesday Challenge. This is an initiative to encourage Tauranga residents to travel differently on Wednesday to reduce the number of solo occupancy in cars and get all the associated benefits (less traffic on roads, less contribution to Climate Change etc). Students sign up on the website and then earn points each Wednesday if they log their journey.
After the first day of this competition on Wednesday 2nd March, the College was the leading organisation out of the 70 plus that have signed up! HALBERG AWARDS
Congratulations to Kane Williamson, Captain of the Black Caps, who took out the Sportsman of the Year Award at the recent 2022 Halberg Award Ceremony.
Kane was recognised for his tremendous leadership of the team and for his avalanche of runs. He also won the award in 2015.

SECOND-HAND UNIFORM SALES
Tauranga Boys’ College Uniform Shop has an ever-changing selection of second-hand uniforms for sale. We sell ‘on behalf’ of families and would like to suggest that any time from now on would be a good time to bring in unwanted items.
We have a large demand throughout December and January for uniforms in good condition that have been freshly washed. Payments are made once items are sold and it is done via internet banking so please bring your bank account details with you.

Good Clean Second Hand TBC College Uniform Items
Our TBC Welfare Centre facilitates care and support for our boys in need. One initiative we have is to collect donations of unwanted second-hand Tauranga Boys’ College uniforms and we distribute these where most needed.
Good condition, clean uniform items can be dropped into Tauranga Boys’ College Reception or at our TBC Hillsdene Store Uniform Shop.

Matters involving college policy should go to the Principal, Mr Robert Mangan or in his absence, Associate Principal, Mr Ian Stuart or Deputy Principal in charge of Senior School, Mr Rob Gilbert, or Deputy Principal in charge of Junior School, Mr Leyton Watson.
Matters involving academic questions and class placements should be referred to the Tutors. They are:
- Year 13: Mr Justin Brewer

Questions involving careers or work experience should be addressed to Mr Tom Collin.
Personal Matters or issues of health which are affecting learning should be referred to our Guidance Counsellors, Mrs Jo Wallace-Boyd, Mrs Kylie Gemming or Mrs Rebekah Whittle.
Matters involving discipline - matters such as unexplained absences, loss of equipment, bullying, detentions, classroom behaviour etc. should be referred to the Assistant Principal in charge of Student Management, Mr Mike Akkerman, Associate Dean, Mr Ben Ormsby or one of the Year Level Deans:
- Year 13: Mr Tane Taitoko
- Year 12: Mr Dan Anson
- Year 11: Mr Richard Apanui
- Year 10: Mr Hamish Boyce
- Year 9: Mr Alex Bryant
Late lunches, forgotten appointments etc. need to be notified to the Student Office before 8.00am to catch the Daily Information Sheet (DIS). The office can deal with the range of information such as opening and closing times, illnesses, uniform shop times etc.
To make contact with any of these people ring the College Office on 578 4029. If the person you want it teaching at that time, please leave a message or have them call you back. Return calls are usually made during intervals and lunchtimes, when the teacher has a non-teaching period or after the teaching day ends at 3.10pm. If uncertain as to who to talk to, please ask the office staff.

- If your son is away for any reason please advise the school. You can do this via the parent portal. Login to www.tbc.school.nz using your son's ID and your parent portal login password. Or you can email attendance@tbc.school.nz or phone the school office on 07 578 4029. You can also monitor your son's attendance via the portal. If you son is unwell for more than 3 days a medial certificate may be requested. Text messages are sent home but not daily so it is recommended that you keep an eye on your son's attendance and if you have any concerns, please contact the school via either the attendance officer or your son's Dean.
- If your son is going to be out of school for an extended length of time, including sporting and cultural commitments, permission is required from the Principal. Please send your request to principal@tbc.school.nz

REQUESTS FOR HOLIDAYS
DURING TERM TIME

I am concerned with the number of requests I receive from parents for time off for their sons during school term to travel in New Zealand for holidays.
I understand the educational value of travel but remind parents to be mindful of the impact time away from the classroom can have on your son's academic achievement.
Of particular concern is when this absence occurs at the same time NCEA internal assessments are planned, as this can have a significant effect on your son's NCEA results.
Ministry of Education regulations only allow me to give permission for absence from school due to illness or family bereavement and advise that all trips / holidays should be taken during official school holiday periods.
I would ask that all requests for leave are sent to me at principal@tbc.school.nz
My preference is for all leave of this nature to occur during the school holidays. Leave from school for holiday travel that is taken outside of school holiday periods will be recorded as "explained but unjustified".

School Health Service
The school nurse this year is Vicki (Mon-Thurs) who is a fully registered nurse funded by the Western BOP Primary Health Organisation. The clinic is located down by the gym and there is no cost for the youth health services. This is in addition to the sickbay team at the main office with whom the nurse work closely, to provide best care to the boys at TBC. There is also a GP who does a short clinic each Monday for those who may face barriers to accessing their own GP.
In an attempt to support our young men with any challenges and to identify any barriers to learning at an early stage, health assessments may be done in Year 9 (or other years if required) and include a discussion around; physical health, growth and development, hearing, vision,activities, eating and weight, school and home, drugs and alcohol, sexuality, mood and safety (HEADDSS).

Student Physiotherapy Services onsite
Tauranga Boys' College has a partnership with Foundation Sports and Rehabilitation Clinic to provide FREE services to all students onsite. This means the boys limit time away from teaching and learning as they rehabilitate. The physio room is attached to Gym 2 and the Athlete Development room.
