ADULTS AND PAST GRADS: COME TO CAMP THIS SUMMER
Become Staff -- because Camp Kindling is an amazing experience for those over 18, too!

If you’re a co-op sector or credit union system employee, elected official, Camp Kindling alumnus or volunteer aged 17+, consider volunteering to staff one of our camps.

You'll increase your co-op knowledge, and learn a lot about the next generation of co-op and community leaders. This may even count towards your professional development or volunteering goals at work.

Prior experience working with young people isn't essential. The staff training workshop held May 26-28, 2022 will provide you with all the resources and information you need for your camp. As well, each staff team has a program assistant, a co-ordinator and experienced staff members, so you will have guidance and support throughout the week.

Camp requires about 50 staff annually to run. Make this the year you reach out to us to learn more. We've posted lots about what staff do and what applicants need to know on our recently updated Camp Kindling WEBSITE.
Apply by March 18.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS ENABLE ADDITION TO UNITY CURLING CLUB

Credit unions and co-ops contribute to their communities in many ways. This is one example.

A Unity Curling club project began as an idea and evolved into a decision in the 2019-20 season and construction, which began in 2021, is now completed.

Support from community co-operatives Delta Co-op, and Unity Credit Union, were a big boost to this addition to the curling club, with each business contributing $10,000. Both businesses have been long-time supporters of the curling club and, through their support, the club has managed to ride the waves of highs and lows each season, especially those presented by the pandemic.

The project adds a larger ladies’ dressing room, a revitalized men’s dressing room and a specific meeting room, which are all attached to the main building. Read the full Sasktoday.ca article HERE.

IS THIS THE YEAR YOU JOIN YOUR CREDIT UNION'S BOARD OF DIRECTORS?

Help shape the future direction of your local financial co-operative.

Become involved in your credit union! This is the time of year when many credit unions are seeking nominations to the board of directors.

If you're a member, check the WEBSITE or social media pages of your credit union to learn about qualifications, commitments and eligibility. If they aren't accepting nominations now, find out when and mark it in your calendar.

Not sure you want to join the board? Many credit unions (and co-ops!) also need committee members and youth representation.

A round up of some Twitter posts we’ve seen recently.

  • Synergy Credit Union @Synergycu: "Opening your phone to a text from the government of Canada saying they’ll be sending you hundreds of dollars probably sounds a little too good to be true and, frankly, it is." Read on in this article from Global News: http://ow.ly/PMWP50I3Gip

  • Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada @CHFCanada: We are appreciative to have been part of the Housing Supply Summit. And we agree: more housing supply is essential. We also believe some of it has to be intentionally affordable to those with low incomes. We have some ideas on how: https://chfcanada.coop/building-the-pathway-out-of-the-housing-crisis-by-building-co-op-housing/

SCA BLOG POST: WHY SUPPORTING CO-OPS IS IMPORTANT

68% of every dollar spent in your community stays local according to study.

If you can access the same services through a co-operative, why WOULDN’T you support this  locally-owned, community-benefitting, values-based option? (Which is presumably aligned with your own values.)

When people (especially in urban areas) have a choice of product/service providers, the rationale to be a member and keep an existing co-op going can sometimes be murky for members and potential members. Co-operatives need to be able to articulate why people should be a member of their co-op when they have a choice of businesses that can meet their needs.

In our latest SCA blog post, we look at some of the reasons why members (and future members!) might choose to be part of a co-operative, some of the challenges that having competition creates for co-ops, and why it’s a great idea to be a member of and support a co-op, even if you can get your product/service elsewhere.

Read Victoria Morris’ final blog post as SCA’s executive director - including her top 6 list of why you should choose to support a co-operative HEREReason #6: More local economic benefits, and spin-off jobs created.
