Ex-ante evaluation of India's trade alliance with Indo-Pacific region : A general equilibrium analysis, AWP 211, February 2022

This study attempts to analyse the economy wide impact of Indo-Pacific alliance between India and rest of the 45 participating countries. We introduce four simulation scenarios in the general equilibrium model.

The paper uses the GTAP (Global Trade Analysis Project) model simulations for the analysis and the results reveal that for India the welfare gains in terms of equivalent variation and real GDP are maximum in the third simulation scenario. The article suggests a roadmap for maximum welfare gains for India keeping strategic and economic engagements with other member countries and sub-regions. More details: Click here.

Webinar on Unlocking the potential of cross-border digital services trade, 23 February

Rapid digitization in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic is driving growth in services trade. Although, Asia and the Pacific experienced rapid growth in digital services trade between 2005 and 2020, and is leading the way in areas such as business process outsourcing and IT and technology services. Still, the region lags behind other advanced economies such as the EU and North America in terms of the share of digital services exports in total exports of goods and services.

This webinar therefore aimed to shed light on these critical issues and explored ways to leverage what trade in digital services offers the region. More details : Click here.

Regional Conversation Series : Promoting regional cooperation for enhancing access to essential health products, 23 March 2022, 2pm - 4 pm (UTC+7)

Gross inequities in the availability of health products have left much of the developing world without access to vaccines. Supply levels for these products have not matched global demand, primarily because of limited global production capacity, the continuing emergence of new variants of concern, and the demand for vaccine booster doses in developed countries. Some developed countries have also procured many more vaccines than they need to vaccinate their populations, and transportation and supply chain limitations have limited the widespread distribution of these products.

The objective of this Regional Conversation is to highlight the significance of trade, investment, and research and development in enabling equitable and affordable access to essential health products in Asia and the Pacific and the possibilities for regional cooperation to facilitate this access.  More details: Click here.

PIDS - Webinar : Boosting the Philippines' participation in services trade agreements, 10 March, 2 pm - 4 pm (GMT +8)

This study reviewed the Philippines’ participation in services trade agreements to date at the multilateral (WTO GATS), regional (ASEAN and dialogue partners), and bilateral levels (PJEPA and PH-EFTA FTA). It also discussed the government’s institutional arrangements for trade in services negotiations. To harness the benefits of participating in free trade agreements, the study suggests judicious exercise of policy space in binding commitments, involving private sectors earlier in the cycle of services negotiations, clarifying and delineating roles of government agencies, capacitating private sectors and MSMEs to engage in trade in services more actively, and increasing market opportunities for the country. CPD - Gas-LNG debate in energy supply: Costs and consequences of LNG import for the power sector, 13 February

Major economic activities of the household, industry, transport and power sectors have been facing challenges due to shortage of gas supply. The government has attempted to adjust the gas shortage through augmenting liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports. The LNG import has significant fiscal-budgetary consequences. Bangladesh should not consider LNG import as a long-term solution, especially for the power sector. Government should put emphasis on clean energy based power generation, gradually increase the share of renewable energy in the fuel-mix, improve energy efficiency. Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) should revisit its existing power generation plan which are in the pipeline and should not encourage future power plants based on LNG or petroleum. PIDS - How can the Philippines seize opportunities in services trade under RCEP ?

A close look at RCEP reveals that this trade agreement includes improved commitments from ASEAN's FTA partners in trade in services, which the Philippines can exploit.

It argues that addressing inadequacies in infrastructure and relaxing constitutional restraints, particularly on allowing the entry of foreign participants to critical sectors, are necessary for the country to do well in services trade. This Policy Notes also maintains that the RCEP can be an avenue for upgrading the country's human capital. To download the paper: Click here.
