Support and prayer for Ukraine

On Sunday, 27 February 2022, Bishop Libby and the Dean of Derby stood alongside our Ukrainian sisters and brothers at a gathering in Derby City centre to demonstrate their support and the support of the Church of England for the people of the Ukraine at this tragic and troubling time.

Bishop Libby and Bishop Malcolm joined the Archbishops of Canterbury and York in condemning the invasion of Ukraine and calling for prayers for all those affected.

On Sunday, Churches across Derbyshire and the country prayed for peace in the Ukraine. The Archbishops issued a joint prayer which is included below.

In a joint statement, the archbishops said: "The horrific and unprovoked attack on Ukraine is an act of great evil. Placing our trust in Jesus Christ, the author of peace, we pray for an urgent ceasefire and a withdrawal of Russian forces. "We call for a public decision to choose the way of peace and an international conference to secure long term agreements for stability and lasting peace.”

Community of Prayer during Lent

2027 Community of Prayer Wednesday Morning Prayer

National Day of Reflection 2022

Marie Curie are again spearheading the campaign for a Day of Reflection to mark the anniversary of the beginning of the first UK Lockdown – and to let bereaved people know that they are not alone.

The day revolves around a “minute to reflect, a moment to connect” minute-long silence at midday. This year community spaces are also being asked to create ‘Walls of Reflection’ where people can write names, add pictures and mementos of people they are remembering.

The day will end at 8.00pm when people are asked to light a candle and place it in their window to "shine a light" in remembering someone who's died and to show support to people living with the trauma of loss.

A prayer for the day of reflection

God of Love,

As we think about all that has changed,
help us to trust that you are always with us.
As we remember those who have died,
help us to trust they are at peace with you.
As we reach out to others with kindness and care,
may hope shine out in every heart and home.
Amen

Earth Hour

One of the world’s largest environmental movements, is taking place on Saturday 26th March 2022, 8.30pm

What is Earth Hour?
Earth Hour reminds us that even small actions can make a big difference. When we make changes in our own lives to reduce our footprint, we inspire those around us to do the same. And together, we are a powerful global movement that governments and businesses can’t ignore.  Everyone has a part to play – and it starts with a single switch.

During Earth Hour

  • Switch off your lights and take an hour to reflect on what nature means to you.
  • Enjoy a meat-free meal by candlelight with your friends and family.
  • Put your phone on do not disturb, press play on the Earth Hour Spotify playlist and enjoy some down time to yourself.
  • Share how you’re spending the hour on social media using #EarthHourUK.

Developing your Faith and Ministry
Discipleship Training

www.discipleship-training.org

We are now taking applications for our Spring Term modules (start in April) and the Certificate in Mission & Ministry full programme. Each module consists of 10 sessions, all of which you can access online.

The modules are designed to help you grow your faith and develop the ministry to which God has called you (and we are all called to ministry of some kind!).

There are no entry requirements, just a desire to grow in faith and some time to study and reflect. The modules running in Spring Term are:
  • Opening Up the Bible: do you want to know about the New Testament?  This module is for you. Gain new insights into familiar scriptures.
  • Doctrine & History: if you've ever wondered why we believe some of the things we do then this module will help to answer some of your questions.
Closing date for applications: Friday, 1 April 2022.

Licensed Lay Ministry (Reader) training (LLM(R))

The LLM(Reader) pathway starts again in September.  This two-year course is studied by accessing the modules online.  You will need to join Zoom study days each year and take part in practical ministry in your church (the course is run on an apprenticeship model).

There are no entry requirements apart from a valid enhanced child and adult workforce DBS certificate (which you can apply for during the first module), the support of your incumbent (or Area Dean in a Vacancy), and, by the second discernment year, the support of your PCC, a Vocations Advisor and the Warden of Readers.

For more details please visit the website or contact dawn.glen@derby.anglican.org.

Closing date for applications: Friday, 30 September 2022.
