Hello!

Welcome to our quarterly newsletter, bringing you an update on climate action Forest of Dean District Council has been taking over the last few months, as well as news from elsewhere in the district.

Coleford offices decarbonisation

Following the installation of solar panels and LED lighting at our Coleford offices last year, two further works are due to be completed in March. This will see the building's current gas-fired hot water system replaced by several point-of-use electric water heaters in toilets and kitchens, as well as the installation of cavity wall insulation in the building's external walls. These two measures combined are estimated to save the equivalent of 13 tonnes of carbon per year and should enable the building to go gas-free throughout the summer months when the central heating is not needed to be on. Both were identified as part of the Heat Decarbonisation Plan for the building.

Helping keep homes warm

The Council is continuing to help reduce carbon emissions and fuel poverty amongst vulnerable households through the Warm and Well scheme, delivered by Severn Wye Energy Agency. Between April and December 2021, 364 households have been provided with support, resulting in an average of £507 of potential savings per home and 110 energy-saving home improvements.

Stakeholders come together to discuss COP26 outcomes

In December we co-hosted an online event with Green Futures Network to learn and discuss how the outcomes of COP26 support the carbon neutral ambitions of policy-makers and communities in the district. The event brought together district, parish and town councillors and officers, as well as public, private-sector and community organisations. It also included presentations by Forestry England, Two Rivers Housing, South West Energy Hub and Dymock Rural Action/Forest Climate Group.

Due to a recording error, the presentation on COP26 outcomes is not available to watch, however you can see a very similar presentation at the start of the recording for the corresponding event for Exeter here:

FoD Climate Action Partnership update

An online tool that will enable climate action initiatives and projects in the district to be mapped and connect with each other is in development. The tool will showcase a range of initiatives relating to energy, waste, transport, biodiversity and food plus more, and help foster collaboration and spread information and knowledge so that others in the district can learn from and replicate them.

A constitution for the partnership is also being developed as part of plans to make it an accountable body in order to create a clear structure within the partnership and enable it to seek funding.

Look out for further updates on the partnership soon.
