Spotted in the GNA
This week, for our Spotted in the GNA feature, we're doing a close up on a creature you know (or think you know) very well, the American Red Squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus). While the American Red Squirrel population is plentiful across the continent, the survival rate of its young is a mere 22% and depends entirely upon its success acquiring its own territory or "midden" before the first winter. Like any house hunter, young may accomplish their homesteading by either competing for vacant territory, establishing new, or inheriting from their mothers. Mother squirrels have been known to gather additional middens prior to giving birth for the purpose of bequeathing them to her young.
Remember, you can find a whole host of images and information about the hundreds of species found in the Gordon Natural Area by accessing the GNA'sBiotapage.
Sustainability Council Meeting The Sustainability Council meets again this Friday, March 4th at 1:30pm on Zoom. Anyone interested in joining can reach out to Chair, Professor Aliza Richman for the meeting link.
