Carolina Doran, project officer at ECSA, will be a speaker at the event Reaching Out and Stepping Up - How citizen science and RRI can enhance bioscience research organized by , ResBios and StepChange to be held online on March 28th (14:00 CET) about how RRI and citizen science can be used to enhance research, with a particular focus on open science and public engagement in the fields of bioscience research. Click here to register for this event.

Looking for Citizen Science practitioners in the bioscience fields

Carolina Doran, project officer at ECSA wants to tell your story. If you have been involved
in CS projects in the bioscience fields and want to co-create of Carolina's presentation, contribute on her miro board. The results will shape a story to be presented at the event "Reaching Out and Stepping Up - How CS and RRI can Enhance Bioscience Research". Should you have any questions contact Carolina directly (Carolina.Doran@mfn.berlin). Contributions are welcome until the 18th of March.

Shaping a sustainable society together

The Action for Sustainable Future hub, a cooperation between the Open Innovation in Science Center of the Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft and the University of Applied Arts Vienna (Angewandte) presents key projects. The projects will work at the interface of art, science and society to address sustainable development in the sense of the UN Agenda 2030, by developing concrete solutions with high social relevance. All projects are participatory and largely initiated by civil society actors.

How can citizens take part in scientific agenda setting?

Up to now, the setting of topics for science funding has often taken place without the active participation of citizens. The PADEMOS project has developed innovative methods and digital tools for participation in the setting of scientific topics and successfully tested them in a series of workshops with citizens and scientists. A chatbot guides users to formulate their questions to science in a structured way and a machine learning-supported visualization of the collected contributions enables scientists and funding policy makers to gain new insights and to respond to citizens' submissions. The project website provides a summary of the lessons learned along with recommendations for using the methods and tools to facilitate such participatory processes.

“Passive” citizen science: New publication

Can the timing and geography of tick bites across Europe be monitored using "passive" citizen science? A new Danish study examines how search-frequencies in Google Trends vary with temperature and precipitation month-by-month across the continent.

New article "Human-machine-learning integration and task allocation in citizen science" published in humanities and social sciences communications

Authors: Marisa Ponti and Alena Seredko, University of Gothenburg, Sweden

Based on an integrative literature review of 50 peer-reviewed papers, the article illustrates the current state of task allocation in citizen science projects that integrate humans and computational technologies, using a framework based on two main dimensions: (a) the nature of the task outsourced to citizens, experts, and machine learning, and (b) the skills required by citizens, experts, and machine learning to perform a task.

Players needed to help advance cancer research

GENIGMA is a game for smartphones that enlists players to solve puzzles while generating scientific data that can detect alterations in genomic sequences and ultimately advance cancer research. The game, out on iOS and Android and available in English, Spanish, Catalan and Italian. The Centre for Genomic Regulation (Spain) looks for players during a three-month long campaign - the #GenigmaChallenge - to analyze the genome of the T-47D breast cell line, a critical resource used by scientists to study cancer and test new drugs to treat the disease.

Help us by participating in the CAMALIOT campaign!

If you are interested in helping us to improve weather forecasting and you have an Android phone, please download the CAMALIOT mobile app. Simply log data from your GPS in the background, e.g., over night, and upload the data when you wake up. As part of a European Space Agency funded project, we are training machine learning algorithms with satellite navigation data collected from mobile phones to improve weather forecasting. The campaign will start in March, for more information visit the CAMALIOT website

ECSA project updates

At the beginning of February the first co-creative workshop with stakeholders took place in the four different pilot locations. The aim of these workshops is to create a powerful network of expertise and interest to tackle air pollution challenges. Check the blog post about the workshop in Sofia.

In February ECSA and Panelfit hosted a webinar about data protection and vulnerable groups. If you missed it, do not worry, we have recorded it and you can find it here!

Cos4Cloud interviewed Maria Daskolia, from project partner NKUA, who has a lot of experience to share on citizen science being a great opportunity for integrating sustainability values into school curricula. Read about Maria’s inspiring work here!In further news, here are some highlights of the co-design of services in Cos4Cloud – four services have been co-designed with the participation of 176 people.
