Dean's Message
Miranda Wilcox

Dear Friends,

Please join the chapter for our annual Bach & Baroque recital on Friday, March 18 at the Provo Central Stake Center starting at 7:00 pm. After enjoying delightful and stirring music by Bach and his contemporaries, we will celebrate Bach's birthday with cake. If you would like to play a piece in person or submit a video, please email me (miranda_wilcox@byu.edu) by Friday, March 4 so I can finalize the program.

The current UVAGO board will complete our term in May 2022. It has been a rewarding experience serving as dean, and I am very grateful for the dedication of our current board. I would like to invite nominations for board members who will serve from June 2022-May 2024. Please consider getting involved in serving local organists.

The chapter board consists of the dean, sub-dean, secretary, treasurer, webmaster, newsletter editor, photographer, membership coordinator, social media coordinator, education coordinator, hospitality coordinator, historian, BYU student representative, and members-at-large. The  board meets twice in the summer to plan monthly activities between September and May. If you would like to make a nomination, please contact the Nomination Committee co-chairs, Kari Nay (kari.nay8265@gmail.com) and Laura Pettersson (llbpett@yahoo.com). Don't be shy about nominating yourself!

Sincerely,
Miranda

Play a piece by Bach or another Baroque composer on the Bigelow organ at the Provo Central Stake Center. Performers may also submit a video of a piece played on an organ of their choice that will be published on the chapter's YouTube channel. To play a piece in person or to submit a video, contact Miranda Wilcox at: miranda_wilcox@byu.edu no later than March 4.
“Lighter Side” Recital Postponed

Due to a multitude of scheduling conflicts, we have found it necessary to postpone our recital highlighting the “lighter side” of music written and arranged for the organ. Please look forward to future announcements about the event, now tentatively scheduled for early Fall 2022.
We encourage all to make the most of this unfortunate turn of events, and use the extra time to learn a piece or two that you might not have otherwise performed or practiced – the more humorous, schmaltzy, and toe-tapping the better!

If you are unsure where to start, chapter member, James Welch, has prepared a list of “lighter” pieces that may spark some inspiration.

Information about how to sign up to play at the event will become available at a later date.

I served as a young service missionary with the Tabernacle Choir from 2016-2018 and worked with the Tabernacle organists and organ technicians. I was able to play the Tabernacle organ every Monday for one hour for the two years that I served. I performed maintenance and tuning on the Tabernacle and Conference Center organs and was able to play all the Temple Square organs. I also helped with producing Music & the Spoken Word each Sunday.
I have been honored and privileged to have been able to work with many wonderful people in my life, especially Richard Elliott, Tabernacle organist. I have been under the mentoring of the following people: All five of the current Tabernacle organists, Clay Christiansen, Bonnie Goodliffe, Neil Harmon, Lynn Thomas, Millie Camire, Ken Udy, Don Cook, Chad Staten, John Longhurst, and Brigham Larson, piano technician.

I am a HUGE fan of the organ and the people who are in the organ world. I have been able to play some awesome organs in my lifetime, including ones at BYU-Provo, BYU-Idaho, University of Utah, Utah State University, and Temple Square. I have also played the Wanamaker organ at Macy’s in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; the Kimball Ballroom organ in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in Boardwalk Hall; and the  Midmer-Losh Boardwalk Hall organ in Atlantic City, New Jersey (pictured above).

Recently, I started my own business of doing piano and organ maintenance, repair, tuning, and restoration. I service all types of pianos and electronic, pump, and pipe organs. I am the only pump organ technician in the State of Utah. I highly value my work and the quality of work that I perform. I eagerly look forward to being of service to anyone of you.

Thank you!

Bonnie Walker is 21 years old and just got home from serving a mission in Syracuse New York, speaking Spanish. She loves hiking, kickboxing, and anything music related. Bonnie has studied the organ since she was 13 and got called as an assistant organist in church. She loves all kinds of music, and the organ is her absolute favorite instrument on the planet. Her main goal is to eventually be able to arrange music for the organ from a variety of different genres.
Renee Gastelum currently studies organ performance under Neil Harmon and Don Cook at Brigham Young University. She became a Colleague of the American Guild of Organists in 2019 and is the organist at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Provo. She most recently served as the rehearsal pianist for A Voice for Good's production of the Easter oratorio Lamb of God and currently teaches Mandarin Chinese at the Provo Missionary Training Center.

To make up for lost time, this year’s festival includes three performances, all of which will be held in Daines Concert Hall (formerly Kent Concert Hall) in the Chase Fine Arts Center:

  • Saturday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m.: Dr. Bradley Welch, Resident Organist for the Dallas Symphony and Artist-in-Residence at Dallas’ Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, will be organist and soloist in a performance of the Duruflé Requiem, Op. 9, and Joseph Jongen’s Symphonie Concertante for organ and orchestra, Op. 81. Collaborating with Dr. Welch will be the American Festival Chorus and Orchestra. Tickets are required. Ticket and concert information are at https://americanfestivalchorus.org/.
  • Wednesday, March 23 at 7:30 p.m.: Dr. Brian Mathias, Tabernacle Organist, in a solo recital featuring works by Bach, Buxtehude, Mendelssohn, Paulus, and Schumann. Admission is free; no tickets required.
The organ in Caine Concert Hall was built in 1973 by the Holtkamp Organ Co., who also undertook the instrument’s renovation and control system upgrade in 2012. The Campbell Organ Festival is named in honor of Paul and Paulette Campbell, whose generosity made possible the renovation of the Holtkamp organ as well as the events in the ongoing Campbell Organ Festival at USU.

The National Convention of the American Guild of Organists is held biennially in even-numbered years and reflects the diverse aspects of the Guild and its official work across the country. Held as a function of the national organization in partnership with a selected chapter, it represents a coalition between the national leadership and the host chapter’s leadership. This joint venture combines the talents and creative strengths of each, and represents the larger vision of the whole membership and its needs.

The AGO holds both national and regional conventions. The regional conventions are held during the summers of odd-numbered years. For more information on national and regional conventions, please visit the AGO website, www.agohq.org.

The five accomplished Tabernacle and Temple Square organists, Richard Elliott, Andrew Unsworth, Brian Mathias, Linda Margetts, and Joseph Peeples, plus occasional guest organists, are featured in this online concert stream:

One year free Guild membership for all current, lapsed, and new members under the age of 30. In an effort to grow the community of younger musicians in the pipe organ field, the American Guild of Organists has declared this year the “Year of the Young Organist.” Through the sharing of performances by young musicians and the publication of resources, we hope to bring more visibility to the new generation of musicians.

National AGO events and new initiatives to be held throughout the year.
Click here or use https://www.agohq.org/free-membership/ for more information and to sign up for your free year of membership (under age 30).
