MPSA Conference Funding
Deadline: Friday, March 11, 2022

The Midwest Political Science Association (MPSA) was founded in 1939 and is dedicated to the advancement of scholarship in all areas of political science.

The purposes of the MPSA are to promote the professional study and teaching of political science, to facilitate communications between those engaged in such study, and to develop standards for and encourage research in theoretical and practical political problems.

The Department of Political Science offers to fund some of our majors and minors to attend MPSA as student presenters if their paper was accepted or to go as an attendee of the conference. This is a great opportunity that affords our students a first-hand look at research and presentations in the field. This year's conference is scheduled to take place on April 7-10.

Award Criteria: All Political Science majors and minors are welcome to apply for this award.

Award Amount: The department will cover the cost of conference registration, lodging and travel to/from Chicago, up to $500.

William Jennings Bryan Prize
Deadline: Friday, March 18, 2022

The William Jennings Bryan Prize is funded out of a speaker’s fee given to the University by William Jennings Bryan in 1896. Bryan himself had received a prize in college which had spurred him on to further endeavors. The prize has been given consistently since 1936. The Department gives this award to the graduating student (or students) who show the most promise each year.

Award Criteria: In deciding the winner of the prize, the Undergraduate Affairs Committee considers grade point average and pattern of course work, honors thesis (if relevant), future plans, and leadership activities at Michigan.

Award Amount: $500 for the Bryan Prize; $1000 for the Leadership Prize

Number Awarded: There are a total of four winners (three from the application pool and one leadership winner.)

You will also need a letter of recommendation for this award. Please have your recommender email polsci-advisor@umich.edu, with your letter of recommendation.

Kleinman Political Science Student Essay Award
Deadline: Friday, March 18, 2022

The Department of Political Science has begun collecting applications for the Kleinman Political Science Student Essay Award. This is awarded to the student that submits the best essay on how the study of political science has shaped their goals. Essays could cover topics such as putting your coursework to action, knowledge gained outside of the classroom, or balancing intellectual curiosity, civic engagement, and job satisfaction. Submissions should be no longer than five pages in length. The award is generously funded by a gift from Sidney Kleinman.

Some potential prompts could include:
  • Knowledge gained outside of the classroom: Participating in internships, holding jobs, and being involved in organizations can be some of the most rewarding experiences during your time in college. Has there been a particular encounter or lesson you have learned a great deal from that did not take place in the classroom?

  • Putting your coursework to action: In your coursework, you look at politics from academic perspectives. You may also follow or find yourself participating in politics in your everyday life. How have you experienced those different perspectives?

  • Balancing intellectual curiosity, civic engagement, and job satisfaction: The purpose of a liberal arts education is to provide students with a skill set that can be applied to a range of professional fields. We know from research and alumni surveys that students are often surprised by how their liberal arts education has helped them land successful careers, while not sacrificing their passions to learn and do more. Have you thought about the intersection of intellectual curiosity, civic engagement, and job satisfaction? What does that look like to you?

Award Criteria: All Political Science majors and minors are welcome to apply for this award.

Award Amount: $1000 (Please note: If more than one student is selected, the amount will be distributed amongst the recipients.)

Number Awarded: 1-2
