Wings Foundation celebrates Black History Month with the story of Joan Dorsey, the first  African American stewardess at American Airlines.

This portrait of Joan is located in the CR Smith Museum at the American Airlines Flight Academy in Fort Worth, Texas. It is one of 5 paintings commissioned directly by C.R. Smith in the mid-1960s during his tenure as CEO of American Airlines. These 5 portraits originally hung in the Flight Service University and were intended to model the image of the “ideal American Airlines stewardess” to all incoming flight attendant trainees.

We express our most sincere gratitude to Linda Hieger Timberlake and Lindell Singleton for granting Wings Foundation permission to feature quotes and photos from their works.

Ms. Timberlake is the co-author of the book “With Wings of Silver and Gold,” a history of the American Airlines flight attendant uniform from 1933-2010. Excerpts from the book were used in conjunction with photos from Mr. Singleton, the former Creative Director at the C.R. Smith Museum in Fort Worth, Texas.
