SUSTAINABLE LIVING IN THE HEATONS RAISED BEDS

NEW VOLUNTEERS WELCOME!

It's the time of year when we are beginning to plan our planting and growing activities for the year.  We look after several plots in the Heatons, where we mostly grow herbs but sometimes salads and vegetables too.

We will be at our raised beds in Heaton Moor on
Saturday 26th February 2022
11am to 12.30pm.

We'll start at the one outside Blue Corn (208 Heaton Moor Road, SK4 4DU), and will move onto the one at the front entrance to The Heaton's Library  (Thornfield Road SK4 3LD)

We'll be cutting back the existing plants, weeding, sorting out the labels, tidying, and planning future sessions.

Join us at either site if you want to express an interest or to find out more about us and what we are doing. If you cannot come, but would like to be involved in the raised beds, please let us know by contacting info@slheatons.org

We'd like to know what days and times would best suit you for joining in with manitenance sessions. Weekends?  Weekdays? Weekday evenings in the summer?
And about any other ideas you might have for these beds.

AN OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE YOUR SAY

We have an exciting opportunity this year to work with a psychology student from the University of Manchester  to help us understand how we can get better community engagement in the Heatons. The student will be carrying out some research with those who get this newsletter so please keep an eye out for an email hitting your inbox some time soon.

PLAY STREETS

Last month we let you know that we'd been successful in an application to Playing Out to help create some Play Streets in the Heatons. We are pleased that a number of streets have approached us to say they'd be interested.  But it's not too late!

If you would like to find out more just drop an email to info@slheatons.org and check out the The Playing Out Film - Playing Out here to find out more about Play Streets and how they benefit the whole community.

SLH CYCLE RIDES 2022

We are planning some short cycle rides to local places for late spring and summer.  Keep an eye out in future newsletters, Heatons Post and our social media platforms so you can sign up and join in!

GUIDED EVENING BAT WALKS

Hot off the press is the news that we have been successful for the third year running in being awarded some funding through Stockport Hydro Environmental Challenge Fund!  This is to be used to buy a few more monitors to identify bats on the wing, which we found last year is very exciting. Our thanks to Stockport Hydro.

Our bats will be coming out of hibernation soon. They come out to hunt for flying insects at dusk. Our guided evening bat observation walks will be available two or three times a week from late March and into April and will be weather dependent.  Our guides will take out parties of up to eight people and you will have shared use our bat detection monitors to identify what you are seeing and hearing. There will be three to five species on the wing. Family groups are welcome. The walk should take about an hour.Keep an eye on our website for when you can book a place to join in. These walks are organised by Sustainable Living in the Heatons with Heaton Mersey Village Conservation Group.

HEATON MERSEY VILLAGE GARDEN

The gardening team meet to maintain this delightful small space on the fourth Tuesday and the second Sunday of the month 10.30am to 12.30pm. Everyone is welcome to join this team of experienced and knowledgeable gardeners to help them keep this space looking lovely.

Heaton Mersey Village Garden is opposite the set of shops that includes McColls and The Good Life, and next to the Sea Scouts hut and the car park on Didsbury Road. Bring gloves and small tools if you have them, although the team come with some equipment. More information from info@slheatons.org

HEDGE MAINTENANCE

We meet on the third Sunday of each month 10am to 12 noon, to maintain our ancient hedge. We clear the area on either side, pick litter,  and at the moment are relaying the hedge while it is in its dormant state .  Wear sturdy shoes and long sleeves and bring gloves, secateurs, shears and a trowel if you have them, although we will come with some equipment. The hedge is between Priestnall allotments and the recreation field, on the lane that links Trentham Avenue (SK4 3QD) and Mersey Road.
Everyone is welcome to pop along for as long as you wish.
Did you know that you could be eligible for a free £10k grant to upgrade your heating and insulation to make your home more energy efficient?

GRANTS TO IMPROVE ENERGY USE IN THE HOME

Greater Manchester Combined Authority is distributing the grants to homeowners and offering to install free air source heat pumps, solar panels, and external wall insulation before the end of June under the Green Homes Grant Scheme. To be eligible you must be a homeowner with a combined gross annual household income of less than £30,000 and an energy efficiency rating of band E, F or G.

Upgrading to a new heating system could help improve your home’s energy efficiency, so you need to use less fuel - helping to relieve some of the pressure on fuel bills. You’ll also be helping the planet by reducing carbon emissions.
For more information on the scheme, visit www.greatermanchester-ca.gov.uk/what-we-do/environment/green-homes-grant/.

HEATONS OPEN GARDENS: SUNDAY 19TH JUNE 2022

The SLH team love to be part of this event which has become an institution in the Heatons calender in recent years. We are planning to join in again this year so put the date in your diary and Save the Day! This year, for the first time, and starting in June, there will also be Heatons and Reddish in Bloom. The Heatons is going to look great!
