We all want to stay independent and healthy as we grow older. With a Life Care Humboldt Community we can keep contributing and better enjoy life.

March 2022 Update
Board member JoAnn Schuch has created a 3-D "visioning Model" to help think through
how we will design our Life Plan Community.

(This is not the actual design)
Greetings to friends, supports and future residents,

Life Care Humboldt is hoping to affiliate with an established nonprofit Life Plan Community out of the area to help guide our development. Affiliating with another Life Plan Community will give us expertise in licensing, management, resources and will help us pay for expenses of development prior to getting bond financing.

Last month we had a great visit with Vassar Byrd, CEO from the Life Plan Community Rose Villa, Portland, Oregon. We are in negotiations with Rose Villa, and are hopeful that we can form a partnership.

We took Vassar on a tour of Humboldt County including a tour of our new property, the zoo and even a walk with JoAnn's famous 'dog walking group'.

Thanks to Septentrio of Arcata, we hosted a reception for Board members, volunteers, and supporters to meet Vassar Byrd and acquaint her with the talented group working for Life Care Humboldt and have her answer questions about next steps.  Joann Schuch created an amazing scale model of our Life Plan Community. Cottages, apartment, roads, and tiny little cars were all in 3-D printed to scale by a helpful volunteer, Rod Ledbetter, impressive!  See photos below.
Left Vassar Byrd, center LCH Board members Kirk Girard and right, LCH Board member Pat Girczyc touring the Arcata property on which we will build our Life Plan Community.

You Never See It Coming!
By Pat Girczyc

I have followed the cartoonist, Gary Larson since 1979 when I moved to the Pacific Northwest and began reading the Seattle Times. His cartoon perspective continues to inform and enlighten while making me laugh out loud! Memories of his cartoon of the kid pushing on the door for entry into the School for the Gifted (the door is marked "pull ") flashes before me with every Push/Pull door I encounter.

Having just turned 72, my husband and I have been doing a lot of talking, thinking, and writing about aging as we help develop the first Life Plan Community on the Northcoast. I am reminded of another Larson cartoon from 1991. Gary Larson has copyrights on his work and I can't share the actual cartoon, so, I will describe it...

Cartoon title: "
You Never See It Coming"

The truck driver honks as an unsuspecting man crosses the street in front of the truck. The side panel of the truck reads: "The Old Age Truck".

The next frame shows the man sprawled in the street. "Wham" and he has tire tread marks on his back.

The last frame is a gray haired, stooped over, cane carrying man with tire tread marks on his back. He is standing on the corner looking at the man lying in the street. He says, " Jim, you too? Bummer!".

My husband and I don’t have tread marks on our backs, yet!  However, we do know the "Old Age Truck" is out there and we do not want to get knocked down and run over.

Our pledge of fiscal support for Life Care Humboldt ensures that the "Old Age Truck" won't surprise us as we cross the street. " We see it coming!"

In the future I will be so ready to live at Life Care Humboldt!

I worked for many happy years as a nurse with new moms and their babies. But since 2004 I have been a caregiver for older people. I’ve even organized teams of caregivers when someone needed more assistance.
I know first-hand how hard it is to find people who will travel around this spread-out county and dependably provide care. I know the costs involved as we get older... and know it is too easy become isolated. While I love my house, I’m starting to get tired of paying the maintenance costs, taxes, insurance, etc. I love knowing the next phase of my life will be independent living in a community of active adults, getting support if I need it, social connections, and no home maintenance to worry about.

Already many of my friends are planning to live in Life Care Humboldt, what fun!
Got Questions
Question:
"I have a question for you and by the way, congrats on your wonderful work, it is so very needed! I have heard that Humboldt County is pretty low on medical care and that many doctors have left the area. So, let's say folks move to your beautiful place, what do you offer them in terms of medical care, do you have a pipeline to that? We looked into one of the programs that offers medical care but you have to be Medi-Cal eligible and we are not eligible and would have to pay 90k a year in premiums, so we can't do that. We would love to hear your feedback".

Answer:
That is a frequently asked question! While we can't promise, we have a family practitioner who says she wants to start a home visit practice and be available to Life Care Humboldt residents. That would be ideal! We are also planning a tele-medicine center with video conferencing ability and assistance using the technology. We plan to offer care coordination to help people navigate the health care system, getting to the right provider in a timely fashion with all the information needed to give you the best care, and making sure the information gets back to your local provider. For the frail elderly, we plan to optimize home health services and support like the PACE model, the program run by Humboldt Senior Resource Center to keep people at home who would otherwise be in skilled nursing.

President Life Care Humboldt
