Enjoy a few behind (and in front of) the scenes images of Birrunga Gallery’s first 2022 Big Art project, the commissioned work of Wiradyuri Stories, on Wiradyuri Ngurambang (Country). Produced by Birrunga with Kane and Stevie on deck as the next part of their Cultural Creative Development Program.

The work is composed of 20x aluminium panels and a custom timber frame that was created under the direction of the wonderful Stephen Champion. Stephen runs the Bathurst Memorial Entertainment Centre (BMEC) and it was in the Town Hall part of the complex where the frame was constructed with the panels secured and primed ready for our team.
As you can see from the images, there wasn't room to spare - meaning we needed to produce the work in landscape rather than portrait orientation - a challenge that Kane and Stevie managed really well. We’d like to thank Stephen and his team for looking after us so beautifully.

After the work was completed and dried sufficiently to manage disassembly without damage, the panels were removed and stored until Birrunga returned to oversee the installation onto the amazingly engineered frame on the side of the Post Office building in Bathurst. A few touch-ups of paint on the screws and the work was left to contractors to clear coat.
We’d like to mention our ongoing relationship with Resene paints, who we use exclusively for our paint supplies. They are amazing in their service and the product is second to none.
Our CCDP crew was invited to attend a Cultural Immersion Guided Tour of the National Gallery of Australia by our Brother Ian RT Colless, from the Dharabuladh (Therabluat) clan of the Gundungurra people. This tour happened after we initially completed the work inside BMEC. The tour was amazing, comprehensive nano-breakneck paced!
There was so much to take in including plenty of behind the scenes access.

Ian’s role is with the National Gallery of Australia's Indigenous Engagement team, as the Wesfarmers Indigenous Arts Leadership Program Coordinator.

Stay tuned because the story doesn’t end here...
The official opening of the mural is on April 28th, 2022.
There will be a number of significant Wiradyuri Ceremonies on the evening, and quite a list of honoured guests.

We will bring you all the details
__  Northshore Big Art

Our Cultural Creative Program’s 2022 is off to a flying start with our Bathurst project, and most recently, with this commissioned work for North Shore Brisbane, which has transformed the popular venue: The North Shore Shed.

As always our works are story based and in this instance we worked in consultation with Jagera TO, Madonna Thomson in the formation and execution of the piece.

The story is the 3 Circles story. This is really just a teaser with the full content and images to come after the official launch and reveal on 18 March.

Birrunga worked with CCDP participants,
Kane Brunjes (Gungerri/Kabi Kabi - 3rd year), and
Stevie O’Chin (Wakka Wake/Kabi Kabi/Koa/Yuin - 2nd year),
as the next installment of their cultural and artistic development.
