The Early Morning Centre - UnitingCare Canberra City - Addressing Issues of Homelessness

MEDIA RELEASE

Launch of the Early Morning Centre's Second Annual Non-Event

Released Monday, 28 February 2022

For immediate release

The Early Morning Centre - UnitingCare Canberra City (EMC) has launched their second annual Non-Event; a fundraiser where attendees can purchase a 'Golden Ticket' to do whatever they want, or nothing at all, while supporting the EMC.

The inaugural Non-Event held last year was a great success. With almost 40 tickets sold, the event raised just over $11,000 for the EMC.

EMC director, Nicole Wiggins, said, "After having to cancel several planned fundraising events due to the pandemic, we are very pleased to be able to hold this fundraising event again to support the work of the EMC."

The Non-Event not only provides the community with an opportunity to support the EMC, but also allows participants the to select a fun activity at a venue of their choice, or alternatively do nothing at all, knowing they have a commitment at that time.

“People can choose to use this opportunity to do something fun with their friends and family, like go out to dinner or have a BBQ, or they can choose to do nothing at all." said Nicole.

Also, as attendees aren’t attending an actual event, tickets are tax-deductible donations. Plus, there’s no concern of cancellations due to COVID.

EMC team member and event organiser, Cherie Styles, explained how the event works, “Attendees will receive a golden ticket with an allocated amount of time which they can choose to use to get out of an obligation, like dinner with the in-laws, and have a relaxing evening, knowing they are supporting vulnerable people in the Canberra community.”

The timing of ticket sales coincides with the annual Hands Across Canberra Hands Up for CBR Giving Day appeal, where all donations made through the appeal are matched.

Funds raised through the Non-Event go directly to support the EMC's mission to address the issues faced by people who are experiencing homelessness, at risk of experiencing homeless, or experiencing social isolation.

Now open seven days a week, the EMC provides a range of support services including a hot, healthy breakfast on weekdays, access to facilities such as showers, lockers, phones and computers with internet access, as well as facilitating healthcare services, accommodation support and community activities.

Benefits of the Non-Event
  • No COVID restrictions, QR codes, social distancing or limited numbers
  • No concerns of event being cancelled if restrictions increase
  • Ticket purchase is regarded as a tax-deductible donation
