Te iwi tahi tatou - We are one family.
Tēnā koutou, Konnichiwa, As-salāmu 'alaykum, Hola, Hello!
It is a very COVID heavy week this week and I am sorry for that.  We are dealing with ever-changing expectations and it is a time-consuming job to keep up with everything.

Sickness and absences - If your child is sick then please keep them at home and contact Healthline or your Medical Centre before your child returns to school.

When a positive case is identified in your household, please inform the school immediately. You can do this by calling me (Toby Stokes) directly on 022 536 8035. Please only use this number for reporting confirmed covid or close contact cases to the school.  All other communication should go through the school office as normal.  There is a link on our website that has more FAQs regarding COVID.  You can find this information here.

I am sure that by this time in the week, you will have heard that we will not be undertaking our school camp at this time.  If you missed the announcement that I sent out on Wednesday night, you can scroll further down this newsletter to find it. (Repeating this also gives me a chance to correct the spelling of Dr Bennett's name. I'm sorry about getting that wrong last night.)
We are continuing with a normal looking school week next week.  Later in the year, we will consider options for  EOTC experiences with our students.
Well ventilated classrooms - We are keeping our doors and windows open and tracking the CO2 levels in the classrooms with the Ministry provided monitor. This monitor is being circulated among the classes and we have been lucky to have had two other devices to capture the levels in more spaces.  Below is a sample of some of the data we have collected.  You will see peaks when the CO2 levels have risen above the recommended level (the red line on the graph).  When this happens teachers have checked that windows and doors are open (sometimes our helpful students shut these!) and they step out of the class and take a break outside.  This gives the room a chance to air out.  You can find out more about the CO2 levels and what this means HERE

Parents, you may be interested in viewing this video that shows what ventilation and mask use do.  Click the above link of your choice and you will be taken a page to view the video.  (They all go to the same video).
Can I also ask that, if your child is wearing a mask at school that you do your best to supply these for your child?  I know this is an extra expense but it really does make a difference to your child's wellbeing.

We are at the end of week 4 of the first term and I am really pleased with how well students are settling into their new kura.  Our Year 7 students are finding their way around the school, friendships are being formed and strengthened and the sun has been shining, which has certainly helped everyone feel good.

Take care and continue to look after yourselves and your children.

Ngā mihi

Fabric request for Textiles

We are looking for largish pieces/offcuts of fabric (cotton, cotton-polyester, linen) for our textiles classes to make pentagonal balls. The fabric shouldn't be too thick and heavy as that makes it difficult to piece together.

Email about the cancellation of Camp:

Nau mai haere mai,

It is with a heavy heart that I, in consultation with the Management Team, the Staff and the Board of Trustees have made the very difficult decision to cancel the school camps for our akonga.  These were set to start on Monday.

I have been seeking advice from several sources, including the Ministry of Education, other Principals who are working through contact tracing of positive cases at their schools and public health advice from Dr Julie Bennett, a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Otago and draw on all of this information in making this decision.

There is a very real risk that our camps will become a super spreader event and this is not a risk that I wish to take with our students and staff.

We have also considered the increase in social interactions that students will have together at these camps and the impact the sleeping arrangements may have on infection rates.

The additional disruption to parents possibly having to come to collect students who might become unwell, and the need for parents to be informed of a possible illness/covid case is also a consideration for me.  These circumstances would cause a significant level of disruption to the camps.

This decision has not been taken lightly but was made to ensure the health and safety of our students, our staff, their whanau and our whole community.

Please help us explain to your children that this difficult decision has been made with their best interest in mind.

Many of you have already paid for the school camp and we will begin the process of refunding your money to you.  Please be patient as we undertake these steps - we will do this as quickly as possible.

WORKS NOTICE

The private car park at the end of Angus Ave through to Te Wharepouri Street is being resurfaced. There will be new line markings for the residents parking space along with the right of way roadway. This will need to be kept clear at all times and will be specified as a no parking zone. We will also have new speed humps and signage. Parking for pick up and drop off for school will not be able to be used in the future.

During the entire works of 2 weeks the car park will be blocked off to access including using it as a walkway to school. Once completed, only owners of the Angus Avenue and Te Wharepouri St apartments will be able to park within the car park.

The carpark will need to be fully vacant from 9am Monday 28 February. If you do have a vehicle parked within there and not an apartment resident please ensure it is removed by Thursday 24 February

Works is scheduled to commence Monday 28 February weather dependent.

Many thanks for your understanding.

Let’s Get Movin’ in March!

We’re a Movin’March school and counting down to Tuesday 1 March when we’ll start stamping passports at the gate as part of the Walk or Wheel Passport Challenge all through March.  Walking or wheeling to school is a great way to get active, know your neighbourhood, kick start learning for the day AND take care of the environment.  Remember students don’t have to complete their passports to go in the draw to win a $400 MYRIDE voucher at the end of March!

Fancy going in the draw to win a scooter? Parents who take part in our Whānau Facebook competition will be in to win 1 of 5 adult or child Micro Scooters or a Family Pass to Staglands or Zealandia.  Check out the Movin’March website for more on these competitions and how you can take part.

Park & Stride

If you live ‘too far away’ why not try a Park and Stride?  You can still get your passport stamped at the gate!  It helps reduce congestion around the school gate and gives tamariki exercise.

WOW Family Day

We will be holding a special theme on ** where we encourage all tamariki to **.  We really encourage whānau to walk or wheel - even for just one day and join in the Movin’March fun!

Ideas for all the Whānau:

Choose from Subway on Mondays & Tuesdays, Pita Pit on Wednesdays & Fridays or O'Sushi on Thursdays, there's something for everyone with ezLunch! See the full menu here. Order your lunch or register for KINDO here
