With a stormy February coming to a close, it’s finally feeling as if spring may be around the corner and we’re surely all looking forward to venturing out a bit more once the weather starts warming up. The new month also sees the opening of our spring exhibition in the gallery, with exciting new works from all our artists showing from next week until the 1st of May.

As well as the group exhibition, we’re particularly delighted to be showcasing the work of Gabrielle Lord who will be Chalk’s featured artist from 28th February to 21st March. Gabrielle’s current collection of paintings is centred around the magic and spectacle of circus, exploring figures in motion and the passage of time. A selection of her beautiful paintings will be hanging in the gallery window for the next three weeks – a real treat for anyone visiting or passing by. You can read more about Gabrielle's practice, inspiration and process in our latest blog
On Sunday 6th March, Chalk will be hosting a 'Meet The Artist' event in the gallery, from 2pm - 4pm. Do come and meet Gabrielle, who will be delighted to talk about her work and to answer any questions. Everyone is welcome and no advance booking is required. And as an added bonus, there's free parking in the car park across the road from the gallery on a Sunday so it's easy to pop in for as long or as little time as you want!
We're looking forward to hosting more of these events over the year and having the opportunity to meet more of you in person.
The Chalk artists are also looking forward to spending more time together in the beautiful Sussex scenery over the coming year - for inspiration, companionship, and sketching opportunities. Several of us had a very enjoyable day out a few weeks ago at One Garden, Brighton in Stanmer Park, which was a perfect location to do this and proved to be a very successful inaugural event - despite the cold weather! Each artist focussed on something of their particular interest in the garden, using their own choice of medium.
As Lindsey Pearson says: "I wouldn't usually be keen to paint en plein air on a cold, grey, February morning but, being in the One Garden with some Chalkie artists was a perfect incentive to go! It was wonderful to reconnect with them again after almost 2 years of virtual meetings. We shared the pleasure of sketching outside in a lovely setting and it reignited my enthusiasm to get painting again. The show and tell over a cup of much needed coffee was brilliant too. Everyone produced something different and we had a lovely time."

Meanwhile, Lyndsey Smith worked her way around the garden filling a concertina sketchbook with line and wash. A robin sat beside her, watched and sang while she painted. She says: "A lovely peaceful morning was spent sketching at One Garden, Stanmer Park, by several of the Chalk Gallery Artists, followed by a catch up over coffee."
Our sketching at Stanmer will inspire work for the gallery window exhibition in April which will be based around the theme of gardens.
Out and abouts

Lyndsey Smith will have two paintings included in an exhibition of work with other members of The Society of Graphic Fine Art, at Watts Gallery Artist Village in Surrey, 18th March to 2nd May 2022.
Running alongside this exhibition will be the chance to see an exhibition of Pre-Raphaelite drawn treasures. There are also tea rooms and gardens to enjoy at the venue.
