Poulsbo Sons of Norway 2-44 - President's Message
Hej all,
It’s a new beginning!
What a way to start the year for the lodge! The lutefisk dinner we had on January 29 was a great success.  It was a bit of a risk to have a big dinner in house with protocols in place and lots of new volunteers helping but we did it.  With timed seating and advance sales, the event was managed very well.  Over 300 people had dinner with us including a contingent from the Bothell and Bremerton lodges.  Thanks for the support!  Social media had plenty of praise for us putting on a grand meal and getting back to what was normal just a couple years ago. It was a good experience and I’m looking forward to next year’s dinner already.
We then tried something new by partnering with Liberty Bay Books and hosting a book reading by acclaimed author Eric Dregni, For the Love of Cod on February 11.  Another successful event of the lodge and spearheaded by our office manager Christina Webster and with numerous volunteers we were able to generate donations to the lodge and sold food and beer and wine to the happy attendees, many who weren’t yet members of the lodge. But I witnessed a few taking membership applications after seeing what a grand lodge we have.  Mr. Dregni was to do a reading the next day at the Nordic Museum in Seattle, and I’ll bet he had warm words to say of his experience in Poulsbo.
The next day the Vikings had their Valentine bonfire Valisblot, another community event that just seems to make people happy to be here. The procession through town, the Viking bonfire proclamation from Brennan and a host of photo opportunities provided a great time and lots of smiles.  Thanks to the Vikings!
These are exciting times and it's just March. The next lodge meeting is March 8 at 7pm. The cultural program will have food preparation so you will want to come by and have a taste.  Part of the meeting will be nominating delegates for the District 2 convention June 1-4 in Portland.  Looking for members who have been to lodge meetings the past year that have familiarity with the lodge needs to be delegates, so come if you are interested.  See you around the lodge!

Visste Du?
(Did you know?)
DID YOU KNOW:  Members who wish to enjoy the Trolls’ Den are supposed to purchase a Trolls’ Den door access card for $15.  This card is renewable annually for $5 and, in fact, must be renewed by March 1st.  If you haven’t purchased your card yet, now would be a good time as the cost of the cards may increase in 2022.  Ringing the bell to enter the bar requires the bartender to stop, check the camera view, and remotely open the door—which is very disruptive, especially during busy times in the bar.  So, if you don’t have a door key card, please be considerate and purchase one now.  Ask the bartender for an application form.

Runic Discoveries from Medieval Oslo

Medieval Park (Middelalderparken) in Oslo is a 43-acre reserve that was opened in 2000. Its contents, as the name infers, date back to the Middle Ages.

A recent excavation unearthed two unique artifacts with Old Norse runic inscriptions. One piece was an animal bone with an inscription, the first such find in the capital in almost four decades. Archaeologist Solveig Thorkildsen told sci-news.com that finding runes had been at the top of her wishlist for this dig.

The second find was a piece of wood inscribed on three sides in both Old Norse and Latin, with a sacred theme. It was in an area that had probably been used for refuse. Ingeborg Hornkjøl says she was documenting a ditch are and saw that a piece of wood had washed out. She picked it up and was astounded to find a long inscription carved into the fragment.

Professor of runology and iconography at the University of Oslo (UiO) Kristel Zilmer is researching the inscriptions, which may be portions of longer text. Her initial interpretation of the objects confirms that the writing style stems from the era of 1100 to 1350.
