St Peter's Cathedral e-News - Friday 25 February 2022
Welcome from the Precentor
Dear Parishioners,
It is with heavy hearts that we hear of events in the Ukraine this week. We know that you will be joining us in praying for all caught up in these events, especially innocent men, women, and children, and for all who are trying to bring about peace. We pray these things knowing that the spirit of Jesus who suffered the violence of the cross, the Prince of Peace, nurtures our prayers and holds all in his loving arms.

The Archbishops of Canterbury and York have given us the prayer that follows, and we commend it to you.
We do hope you will join us this Sunday 27th February, as we gather for services in St Peter’s Cathedral reflecting on Jesus’ words in Chapter 6 of Luke’s Gospel about the struggle of discipleship. This struggle is no clearer when we find ourselves holding in our hearts events so beyond our control.
We also hope you will join us on Wednesday 2nd March, Ash Wednesday, as we gather for Eucharist and the imposition of ashes in the Cathedral at 7.30am, 10.00am and 6pm. Here, as we enter the holy season of Lent, we will ponder the words, “Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return”.

Many blessings,
 Jenny Wilson, Canon Precentor.

Opera meets Organ!

After a sell-out concert in early 2021, husband-and-wife musical sensations soprano Jessica Dean and organist Anthony Hunt return on Saturday 5 March to the mighty organ of St Peter’s Cathedral to give a concert unlike anything else - where the worlds of opera and organ collide.

Anthony writes, "A few hints about the program Jessica and I are presenting:
If you like your music grand and Wagnerian, then we have the overture from Die Meistersinger.
If you like your singing spectacular, then we have Ophelia’s Mad Scene from Hamlet (You might not know this, but it is an extraordinary bit of 19th Century french Grand Opera to perform in the acoustic of the Cathedral.)
And for a moment of sublime calm and transportation, what is better than the melting Méditation from Thaïs?"
