Program Spotlight
Giving Back to Our Community
|
|
|
Last week, our students learned more about the issue of homelessness, and had a chance to support the important work of the Blanchet House and Farm by creating sack lunches for them to give to their guests. The Blanchet House shared a Zoom presentation with our students about the causes and challenges of homelessness, and our classrooms learned more through conversations and books. You can find more resources for talking with children about this issue here.
Our younger students decorated lunch bags with notes of care and love, and our older students assembled the food bags. In total, our students decorated and prepared 100 lunches for the Blanchet House to distribute. The Blanchet House shared that their sack lunch program is a highlight of the week for some guests, and that the decorated bags with notes of encouragement are a very appreciated way for their community to know they are noticed and cared about.
Fostering a sense of community and highlighting the ways we can help those in need allows our students to know they make a difference in the world, and helps them build empathy and understanding for others.

COVID-19 Updates
Next week, we anticipate getting updated Covid-19 guidelines from the Department of Health and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. Our team will review the materials and update families on any shifts or changes. As a reminder, starting on Monday, March 7th, wearing masks outside on campus will be optional for children and adults. Just today, a new announcement from Governor Inslee allows masks to be optional indoors as of March 12th.
Masks are still required for all inside buildings per state guidelines until March 12th. From March 7th-March 12th, we ask that your child leaves the car at drop off with their mask on and ready to enter the indoor space. We truly appreciate our community and how you continue to move through the various guidelines with us, and are thankful for continued success for in person learning at our school.

Campus Spotlight
Nature Play Spaces
Our nature play spaces were enhanced this last week when we were able to add some new features from our recent arborist work. The Imagination Playground has been updated with log stairs, rounds, and balance spaces for students to strengthen gross motor skills while investigating natural materials.
Being good stewards of our campus is an important value of the Gardner School, and being able to repurpose the materials from our campus trees helps teach our students the ways we can appreciate the beauty of nature around us.
Stay tuned for more campus play updates in the coming months!

Learning in Action
Guest Speaker Experiences
|
|
We love all the ways our greater community supports the learning in our classroom spaces. The local Tahitian dance group, Ora Nui Dance Troupe, has visited our Wy'East class during their last two studies of the Polynesian islands. Our students are taught about traditional costumes and the artistic dances from these wonderful volunteers.
We appreciate the opportunity for our students to connect with local experts, and our students benefit from seeing the connections between their classroom learning and the real world.

Campus snapshots
Students are actively learning in their classrooms, and extending that learning into the outdoors while they play with classmates and explore the natural spaces on campus.
