Interventions and Support for Acts of Bias
Sign on grass reads "Hate Has No Home Here." People hold up signs including the Black Lives Matter logo, the trans pride flag, the American flag, a peace sign, and the LGBTQ+ pride flag.
As the University continues to strive toward our core values, it is important to remember that inclusion must sit at the heart of our work.  While some members of our community might struggle with the efforts that reflect the value of all identities, for inclusion to be a reality, acts of bias or hate cannot remain in our community experience.  Such actions go against Carnegie Mellon University’s core values and could violate the University’s Statement of Assurance.

Particularly in light of recent reports of bias and vandalism, we encourage all members of our community to report any act of bias or hate that occurs, both on and off-campus and in public or private spaces.  As our Vice Provost for Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer, Dr. Heading-Grant stated in her November 2021 communication, the University condemns any actions that threaten the safety and inclusion of any members of the community and is committed to holding accountable those who engage in misconduct. This includes acts of vandalism by destroying campus restroom signage and posting of signs that communicate hate or threaten the sense of belonging for community members.

As we strive to create an environment that feels safe for all, we encourage everyone to report misconduct and acts of vandalism which promote division and exclusion within our community.

Reports can be made to:
  • Carnegie Mellon University Police Department at 412.268-2323
  • For clean-up and/or repair of incidents of vandalism on university property, please send an email to Fixit@andrew.cmu.edu
  • Office of Title IX Initiatives at tix@cmu.edu
  • Center for Student Diversity at csdi@andrew.cmu.edu
  • The Office of the Vice Provost for DEI & CDO at vp-dei@andrew.cmu.edu
  • Ethics Reporting Hotline: 877-700-7050 or www.reportit.net (username: tartans; password: plaid)
Through these reporting mechanisms we can simultaneously investigate, repair, and document the harmful incidents.

Moving forward, we encourage campus community members to engage with our available resources as we work collectively to make CMU an institution where everyone knows they belong.
