We have exciting opportunities for ethnic women to participate in interesting and fun community led development activities.

Employment Workshops - Women's Employment Action Plan

The Ministry of Women is developing an action plan to get women into employment, and we are helping them to engage with ethnic women.

We are running two online Zoom workshops to find out what barriers ethnic women in New Zealand face when looking for employment.
  • The first will be on Wednesday 23rd Feb from 5.30pm to 7pm for currently employed women.
  • The second will be on Thursday 24th of February 10am - 11.30am for currently unemployed women.
A koha of $30 will be available to participants as a thank you for joining us.

Please contact info@shama.org.nz to register your interest and receive the link for the Zoom meeting.

Community Research in Housing

We want to make a positive impact within the housing sector that will result in better housing and living outcomes for women overall and with a particular focus on ethnic women.

Shama has contracted Common Ground to carry out research to enable collective housing for women and ethnic women in the Waikato. We aim to to identify the barriers to and enablers of housing that best meets the aspirations and needs of women and ethnic women, exploring innovative solutions and models that exist or have the potential to exist.

We are looking for Waikato ethnic women who:
  • Do not currently own their own home
  • Feel constrained in being able to achieve their housing aspirations
  • Be in a part-time or full-time employment or owning their own business (earning some income)
If you meet the above criteria please fill in the expression of interest form. There are 2 workshops happening this week and we would love to have you. A koha will be available to participants as a thank you for joining us.

Connections Hui

Connections! Hui is back on the 16th of March.

This year, Shama is hosting the Connections! Hui alongside the Hon. Marama Davidson, Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence and Sexual Violence.

This is the second hui like this – in 2019 communities came together and started this journey. We put together the findings from this hui into four papers that were used by government to develop their new strategy, Te Aorerekura.

This year, in the hui, again we will have challenging conversations and make great connections, but in an online version, so we keep safe. You can register here.
