Kia ora March!

Tēnā koutou <<First Name>>

Unfortunately, Omicron is surging in Nelson Tasman. I imagine everyone is busy preparing for the impact on our organisations and our mahi. Volunteer Nelson is sending out regular COVID-19 updates during the Omicron surge. If you would like to receive these updates, please sign up here. You will also receive information on the Community and Whānau Hui and our regular newsletter. The heading will identify the COVID-19 updates.

Now to volunteering news. Despite hesitancy with some people, I have been in contact with others keen to get involved. Volunteer Nelson is offering to put a boost (advert) on Facebook posts for requests for volunteers. We will also continue our advertising in the local papers, rotating each month. The Volunteer in Action promotion is on hold to focus on organisations needing volunteers urgently and new roles. If you need volunteers, please get in touch.

Please take time to communicate your COVID-19 protocols under the different traffic light levels with your current volunteers (and any recruits). Some people may have specific concerns related to their situation. Please keep in mind that vaccination passes expire.

A wise lady with COVID-19 recently recommended planning a treat as part of your first aid kit if you are unwell or have to isolate. What is your joy? Chocolate or a book from the library that you have wanted to read but haven't had time?

I hope you stay well and can take some time to be kind, not just to others but also to yourself in this challenging and busy time.
Ngā mihi nui,

Ellie Young

Tips for Volunteer Management
Ways to record volunteer vaccination passes on Be Collective

If you are using Be Collective to manage your volunteers, you can use it to record vaccination passes.

  • For Volunteers – within the Licenses and Certificates part of their profile (visible to admins of groups they join)
  • For Volunteer Managers – by asking for status and for verification via an upload on relevant Opportunity application forms
  • For Volunteer Managers – same as above but for Group application form
  • By recording a note against their volunteers of their vaccination status
  • By using Custom Fields to record vaccination status of volunteers
If you are not using Be Collective for your end-to-end volunteer management, you could record expiry date against names within a spreadsheet, which you may already be doing for your paid staff.

Tips for the volunteer engagement management process

There are many ways that you can incorporate engagement into your organisation’s management processThe best advice is to treat your volunteers the way you would want to be treated by an organisation you were committing your time to.

Here are a few additional ways to engage volunteers from Volunteer Hub:
  1. Provide volunteers with additional motivation for donating time in the form of incentives.
  2. Create opportunities for your volunteers to lead (develop leadership roles)
  3. Make effective communication with volunteers a top priority for your nonprofit.
  4. Make volunteerism with your nonprofit fun by creating friendships and teams.
  5. Get to know your volunteers and the skills they possess.
  6. Ensure the process of signing up for opportunities is easy for volunteers with the help of volunteer management software.

Vetting volunteers and background checks

Many volunteer organisations work with vulnerable people. It’s important to protect both these people and volunteers against any risks to their well-being and safety. Volunteering can impact the public and the volunteer-involving organisation as a whole too. Given all of this, it’s important to carry out suitable background checks on potential volunteers. We have a resource with suggestions of possible background checks you could do.

Informal volunteering and unpaid work

Nearly half of New Zealanders regularly contribute time and labour to their communities. Yet informal volunteering has not been studied nor well measured. Ground-breaking research about unpaid work and volunteering by Pacific peoples in Aotearoa, found the concept of volunteering to be embedded in Pacific culture.
An incredible 97% of Pacific people give 33 hours per week per person on unpaid work and volunteering. However, official data particularly around informal volunteering in Aotearoa New Zealand is not capturing the contribution of different communities including the Pacific community.
