Using GeoDjango to Map Forest Fire Trajectory

Wildfires have become a perennial worry for communities in the western United States. Minimizing the damage of an ongoing fire is both a complicated and costly prospect — not to mention the danger firefighters are exposed to. Six Feet Up’s expert developers worked with a data science firm to build a website that would help emergency responders more effectively contain wildfires, limiting damage and keeping more people out of harm’s way. Due to the impressive, purposeful and transformative nature of the technology, the Wildfires Project has been designated as one of Six Feet Up’s 10 IMPACTFUL Projects.

Pros and Cons: Which Python-Based Security Tool is Right for You?

With cyberattacks appearing in the headlines more and more in recent years, it raises an obvious question: How should you protect your development computer? With that in mind, we compared two Python-based security tools — Safety and pip-audit — to determine the best option.

How to Set Up Python on Your New Mac

You just got a shiny new MacBook and are eager to start messing around with development tools, but where do you begin? Whether you are an experienced developer moving to macOS or are getting started with your first development computer, we’ve got some basic things you should do to set up your Mac to develop using Python virtual environments. Pro Tip: Don’t rely on the Python version that comes with macOS.

Projects on Deck 👷‍♀️

What's been keeping us busy this month:
  • An organization relies on its home-grown cloud-hosted, mission critical app but no longer has an in-house development team. We’re providing development and deployment services — initially containerizing the app’s services, and then creating a repeatable Terraform deployment plan. This infrastructure improvement will make it possible to have a failover environment and to test new features in staging environments. We’re also implementing features that address users’ needs and simplify the day-to-day management of the application.
  • We’re helping a genome engineering solutions company migrate custom-built workflows from its internal workflow management system to Apache Airflow for task orchestration. This migration will help free up software development resources (who previously needed to maintain the custom orchestration system) and make onboarding new developers (who have experience working with the open source tools like Airflow) easier and faster.
  • A leading wholesale management company needed to complete a Django upgrade on its proprietary platform, which features an advanced and complex tech stack. We helped ensure a successful migration by thinking user-first and carefully upgrading the dependencies piece-by-piece.

Cal's Cool Tools 🧰

Latest cool finds from our CTO Calvin Hendryx-Parker:
  • Chezmoi: This means so much more than “my home” in French. Use this tool to manage your dotfiles across multiple diverse machines, securely.
  • VS Code on your iPad: Hot off the presses! Using the latest version of Blink, you can install the codespaces plugin and start running code remotely from your iPad.
  • Peacock for VS Code: Subtly change the color of your Visual Studio Code workspace for different projects.
  • Posthog: Host your own analytics using this open source package to ensure that your customer data never leaves the house.
  • Kitty: Check out this feature-rich terminal emulator. You extend kitty (which is written in Python) with things called “kittens,” and they’re written in Python. How cool is that?!
