Winter Wonderland

God is always working in the undertow.

My husband spoke those words to me many years ago when I was going through a season where it seemed as though nothing was happening. Where was God, I thought. Why was He not doing anything? Back then I had a hard time believing that God was doing something when all I could see was nothing.

It reminds me of the verse, "we walk by faith and not by sight" (2 Corinthians 5:7). So much of what God is doing, we do not perceive and even when we do, we are often perceiving it in retrospect. As Soren Kierkegaard said, "life is to be lived forwards, but it is to be understood backwards".

Even in the winter seasons of our life, when all seems frozen and dormant, and even dead, we can trust our Father. The One is already in all our future days to come, He never changes (Hebrews 13:8) and His good purposes for us will stand. He is not slow in keeping His promises (2 Peter 3:9) and He will make all things beautiful in His time (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

We may not understand the reasons why this side of eternity but we are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses (Hebrews 12:1) who have gone before us, testifying to the goodness of God. When we cannot trace His hand, we can always trust His heart.

Special Project - Report
Betlaada Teen Challenge
Men's Dormitory

In January GME interviewed Raymond Ajagbe, Director of Betlaada Teen Challenge in Ibadan, Nigeria. You can watch the interview here.

A former addict himself, Raymond felt God call him to minister to other men suffering under addiction to drugs and alcohol. He has described how there are addicts living under bridges and also many who are wasting away in prison because the authorities have nowhere safe to release them. Teen Challenge has begun construction on a dormitory to house up to fifty (50) men.

We are praising God for the generosity of GME supporters. Thanks to your generous donations we were able to send Betlaada Teen Challenge $22,000 CAD to help the project move forward.

The dormitory now has a roof but unfortunately construction has stalled due to a lack of funds. The building still needs doors, and aluminum windows, as well as plumbing and electrical work.

There is a need for an additional $10,000 CAD to complete the building and GME has committed to supporting this project until construction is completed.

Kingdom Builders Spotlight:
Pastors Arif & Endah, Sumatra, Indonesia
Meet Arif Fauzi and his wife Endah Hidayat (names have been changed). The couple have pastored one of the Pentecostal churches in northern Sumatra, Indonesia since 2000. Endah also pastors a house church and they have been blessed with two children. Their son Hamzah is currently working on his Master of Theology and serves with his father as assistant pastor. Their daughter, Farah, is the church’s music coordinator and her husband Joko is the worship leader. Arif says it is a great blessing to have the entire family involved in ministry together.

Now Pastors Arif and Endah are preparing to welcome their first grandchild on March 5th or 7th. Farrah and her baby are both healthy but the doctor's have told them that the baby is too big for a natrual delivery and must be born via caesarean section. The surgery must be performed in a private hospital and therefore the procedure is not covered by government insurance.

The family urgently needs support to cover the $3,500 CAD fee.

It was after graduating high school in 1985 that Pastor Arif says he sensed God calling him into the ministry. He says he accepted Jesus as his Lord and Saviour and offered his life as a living sacrifice to do God’s work (Romans 12:1).  Arif ministered as an evangelist in his home church and studied in both Malaysia and Singapore at Teen Challenge and Asian Ministry Team. He attended Central Pentecostal College in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, and his son was born in there St. Paul’s hospital. He graduated in 1996 and the family returned home to serve in Indonesia.

Known in ancient times as the “Island of Gold” because of gold deposits in the highland regions, Indonesia is the world’s largest island country comprising upward of 17,000 plus islands. Situated between the Indian and Pacific oceans in southeast Asia, Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world. Sumatra in western Indonesia is part of the Sunda islands, a group of islands that are part of four countries (Brunei, East Timor, Indonesia, and Malaysia). A highly seismic island, major earthquakes and tsunamis are common and have been recorded throughout Sumatra’s history, including the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. Sumatra is the largest island that is fully within Indonesian territory and the fifth most populous island in the world, with over 58 million people according to the 2020 census.

Arab and Indian traders introduced Islam to Sumatra in the 6th and 7th centuries. Islam is the major religion in Indonesia with 87.1% of the population identifying as Muslim. Only 10.7% of Indonesians are Christian, with less than 2% identifying as Buddhist and Hindus. Nonetheless, Indonesia still has one of the largest concentrations of Christians in the Muslim world. According to Open Doors USA, Indonesia is number 28 out of 50 on the World Watch List of countries where it is most difficult to follow Jesus. Churches throughout Indonesia have been burned, bombed, and vandalized. Thankfully, Arif reports that the region where his family is has not been greatly disturbed by this type of persecution and by the grace of God he has good friendships with all his neighbors, including the chief of the community.

Still, in any Muslim majority nation, there are risks for those sharing the Gospel as well as risks for those who convert to Christianity. According to Pastor Arif, many times Muslims who convert to Christianity will be abandoned by their family and community. Indonesian Christians must be careful when approaching Muslims, but he says they can share the Gospel as “friendship evangelism” being careful not to speak against their prophet.  Pastor Arif also uses FaceBook and What’s App as evangelistic tools.

In North America and Europe, Christian liberty has been declining. When asked how he would encourage western believers to keep evangelizing and living for Christ in a culture that is increasingly intolerant to the Gospel, Pastor Arif said we must still live as salt and light to those around us, to show our love and care to people by our daily life. He reminds us that we do this because Jesus says that we are the living testimony of Christ; we are little "Christs".

When asked what the biggest challenge is facing their ministry right now, Pastor Arif reported that he has been appointed as the head of the Mission Department and he needs a van to travel to rural areas, to minister to village churches and evangelize. Even more pressing however is his daughter’s immediate need for a caesarian section, the cost of which is $3,500 CAD. Farah and Joko are expecting their first baby, due on March 5th however the doctor has told them that the baby is too large for a natural delivery. The surgery must be performed in a private hospital and therefore the procedure is not covered by government insurance. Moreover, while Farah and the baby are both healthy, Pastor Arif is also requesting prayer for safety from COVID as not only could that affect the health of his daughter and grandchild, but it would also increase hospital fees to about $5,500 CAD.

Please keep Pastors Arif and Endah and their family in your prayers. Please pray specifically for the safe delivery of Pastor Arif’s first grandchild and that God will provide him with the van he needs for travel.

GME Ministry Report:

City wide prayer service - Saturday, January 15th 2022:
GME had the privilege of leading the final prayer service during the week of prayer for the churches in Portage la Prairie. All week we gathered in different churches to seek the Lord. Our theme for the week was the book of Ephesians. Rob had the opportunity to share on Ephesians 6:10-20 on the theme of "Being strong in the Lord". The praise and worship was led by Lauralee Hardee and Beth Beauchamp. We also had three of our directors and leaders involved in leading part of the prayer time. There was such a sense of the Lord's presence in the meeting that people did not want to leave or stop worshipping. We thank God for his Favour upon our time together!

"Understanding our Times" - February 4th & 5th 2022:
GME hosted a men's weekend with author Carl Teichrib with over 40 men joining us from all over southern Manitoba. We started with supper on the Friday evening followed by our first session. Saturday morning we had two sessions, followed by a delicious home made lunch prepared by our incredible volunteers. In the afternoon we dived into a Q&A discussion where attenders had the opportunity to ask questions and participate in a panel discussion. We had very positive feedback regarding this conference and we look forward to doing it again on a larger scale.

It is absolutely vital that we understand the world views that are being propagated by our world leaders at this time. The three sessions with Carl were recorded and you can watch them on our YouTube channel:

Advancing Kingdom Work

Not too long ago we were driving on a country road on a beautiful winter night. We have had a lot of snow this year and the ditches on either side were filled so that you could not tell where the road ended, and the ditches began. Suddenly, we found ourselves sliding sideways off the road and into the snow-covered ditch.  It happened so quickly that there was nothing that we could do to stop our forward and downward momentum. It was very cold out and the experience could have been dangerous if we had not been equipped with four-wheel drive and some past experiences that helped us navigate back onto the road.

Following the path of Biblical truth is like being on a road with ditches on each side. The road represents the best way to go, the way that will provide the safest and best travel experience. Conversely, the ditches represent dangers that may lead to disaster depending on the obstacles that are encountered. Soft and sinking ground, rocks and steep drop-offs all pose a danger to the traveler who plunges off the sides of a road.

It is particularly important to remain on the road of obedience to sound Biblical truth without falling off into error or heresy. We are warned repeatedly by the apostle Paul regarding the importance of sound doctrine and living a life that reflects the truth: “Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers” (1Tim. 4.16).

We are being guided by false teaching more then at any other time in the history of the church. As a result many are being pushed towards the ditches of heresy and unbelief. Again, it is the apostle Paul that warned us: “For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear” (2Tim. 4.3).

I am old enough to remember an older generation of believers and preachers who also warned about this very thing happening in the body of Christ. Their message was serious, and like watchmen they sounded the alarm of things to come. Over time many grew weary of this message. Eventually new generations came along, those who had not experienced hard times, persecution, or the struggles of tyranny. They began to emphasize a message of prosperity, hyper grace and positive feelings. For a long time now, we have heard little about sin, repentance and the turning from evil. As a result, we now find ourselves inundated with immorality, carnality, and comfortability. We have lost the ability to handle difficulty and resist the temptations of this world.

For the most part the church has now become a puppet of the world, doing its bidding with no strength to stand against evil.

With God’s help we must move ourselves out of the ditch and back onto the road. We can no longer tolerate being bashed against the rocks or spinning our tires and going no where. Evil days are indeed upon us, and the time is short. As perilous times advance on many fronts, we need to find our way back onto solid ground, onto the road of solid Biblical living. Once again, we must understand that sin is destructive, evil is dangerous, and that repentance is necessary. May God give us the strength to get back on the road again.
