Q+A with Helen,
Q: What was your first job ever?
A: My first job was in 12th grade. I was a receptionist at a beauty salon near my school. I remember that customers would come into the salon and talk about the struggles they were having.
Q: What do you think benefits neurodivergent children the most in a classroom setting?
A: I believe in a classroom setting it is important for staff to follow through with what is asked from the student and understand that every child is different and it's okay to try new things. Children benefit from an environment that teachers, therapist, and staff work together to accomplish the goals of each child.
Q: What was your first impression of Natally? (Willowcrest’s director)
A: I thought she was a model (laughs) and a very kind and friendly woman.
Q: Is there something you always do / or never do when meeting a new student?
A: One thing I always do is show them a lot of love in the form of positive comments, hugs if they want them, give them a lot of attention so they know they are in a safe place and can trust me. I don’t place demands the first days because I want to build trust first.
Q: Did you like school as a kid? Why or why not?
A: I have always been a school girl (laughs) I love learning new things and my parents always said that education is the most important thing in life, so as a child I would enjoy going to school.
Q: What is something you do to get yourself out of a funk?
A: I either go to church or go to the beach to relax and clear my mind.
