Nau te rourou, naku te rourou, Ka ora ai te iwi. With your basket and mine, our people with thrive.
Around the region, many iwi providers have stood up to provide a COVID-19 response with support from government agencies and District Health Boards. Atiawa ki Whakarongotai embraced the opportunity to provide a mana whenua outreach service delivered in partnership with Hora te Pai Health Service, called Manaaki Kāpiti. We are excited to announce that the service opened their whare last month and are busy delivering to whānau in need in our rohe. Atiawa ki Whakarongota will provide oversight on this kaupapa and will provide support to Manaaki Kāpiti and Hora Te Pai as they grow from strength to strength.
Manaaki Kapiti is a response service for COVID-19 positive cases, to meet whanau health and welfare needs while they are in isolation, either at home or in a Managed or Supported I.Q facility. While this service is iwi-led, it is available to everyone who lives within the Atiawa ki Whakarongotai boundaries (Paekakariki to Pekapeka).
We have been operating for nearly two weeks and have had a steady flow of referrals.
How does Manaaki Kapiti know who needs support?
We get notifications from:
· a national clinical health system
· local GP’s and medical practices
· Other Manaaki services around the region
· a MSD referral system
So, what is the service?
We have joined up with Hora Te Pai Health Services to partner on a bespoke outreach service that is agile and flexible to meet the changing needs of whanau with COVID. We are one of many in the region, each are supported by government agencies and regional district health boards.
Hora te Pai provide clinical and health services, while the Manaaki team support with kai, hygiene packs and any other social needs during isolation.
Is this service available to everyone?
Yes! This service is available to everyone who is COVID positive, living within the Atiawa ki Whakarongotai rohe (Paekakariki to Pekapeka). We know how important it is for whanau to stay at home during this time and we are here to support.
How do I access this service?
There are a couple of ways, through the whanau’s medical practitioner, the COVID self-registrations system and through the Ministry of Social Development’s referral service. We understand that these types of referrals aren’t always timely. If, through your service, you know of someone in need of Manaaki support please contact us through our designated channels.
When are you open?
We are operating from 8am – 5pm Monday to Friday with an on-call service over the weekends (we will increase weekend hours in the coming weeks).
How do I get in touch with the Manaaki Kapiti Team?
If you know of COVID-19 positive households and whanau who may need some outreach support (either clinical or welfare) please feel free to contact Karey on Kara.Kearney@manaakikapiti.org.nz
Rapid antigen testing (RAT)
The Manaaki response team have finally taken delivery of RATs for our priority population, this includes you our Iwi members! if you haven’t been able to get one through a number of local providers then we can support you here.
We are looking to have a collection point at Whakarongotai, we have a number of RATS for our Iwi and whanau Māori, however if you are unable to leave your whare then Karey, Tania and the team will try and arrange a safe drop off especially if you are symptomatic.
We are limited to what can be delivered so make sure you tell us how many people are in the whare, our team have already started making priority calls to our beloved Kaumatua.
Whānau please contact Karey on Kara.Kearney@manaakikapiti.org.nz in the first instance so that we can be assured we meet your needs! Now that we have a lot of COVID-19 cases in the community, a lot of people are trying to get rapid antigen tests.
If you live with someone who has COVID-19 and you develop symptoms, it’s likely you have caught the virus. The best thing you can do is act as if you have tested positive and start your 10 days of isolation.
For many people, COVID-19 will feel like a mild or heavy cold and you can look after yourself in the same way. Rest, drink plenty of liquids, take appropriate remedies or medication to help soothe your symptoms
If at any time you have difficulty breathing, feel seriously unwell or unsafe, call 111 immediately and tell them you have COVID-19 symptoms.
If at any time you or a family member feels very unwell and are concerned about your health, call your GP or health provider. Or call Healthline free:

TEMPORARY MURAL FOR MAHARA PLACE RAMP:
Kia ora koutou
An opportunity for a temporary mural has arisen to cover both vertical sides of a temporary plywood ramp between the Mahara Gallery site (currently being rebuilt) and the old Waikanae Library.
The ramp is sloping, about 10 metres long and 1.8 metres high. (See photo's below)
We estimate one – two week’s work for an artist to deliver something bright and lively for visitors of diverse ages and cultures for the next 12 months or so.
It would be good to work with some local tamariki to help deliver if that was a possibility.
We would like the artwork to reflect narratives, stories or imagery that is relevant to Waikanae.
We will be seeking a paint sponsorship from Resene’s and offering an artist’s fee funded by Kapiti Coast District Council with support from the Public Art Panel.
