VICTORIA, B.C. - The CFL Players’ Association (CFLPA) and Royal Roads University (RRU) are teaming up to harness and add to the lessons learned on the gridiron, to prepare current Canadian Football League (CFL) players for lives and careers after football.

In collaboration with the Canadian Football League Players’ Association Academy, Royal Roads University will offer Sport Leadership, a custom course aimed at building a bridge between football and the future for CFL players, through offering a vital suite of leadership skills.

The program begins April 5, 2022. A limited number of registrations will be reserved for active members of the CFLPA Academy.

“We’re confident programs such as this are going to assist our members and others in translating the skills that they’ve developed through athletics into their next careers. Sports leadership, and leadership in general, is a natural area of study for CFLPA members who routinely experience opportunities in a professional sport setting to develop such skills,” said Brian Ramsay, CFLPA Executive Director.

“Sport needs leadership training and development in all ways, in all forms, in all aspects of the sport system. It’s about the pursuit of excellence,” said Prof. Jennifer Walinga of the RRU School of Communication, who studies sports communication and leadership and who is a former Olympic athlete. “It’s a very human, social endeavour that is about social good, social profit. We’re here to serve the community, we’re here to serve the learning of our nation, our world, and contribute in that way. It makes sense to partner with that organization.”

Sport Leadership provides learners with the competencies and skills to enhance the practice of self, team, and organizational leadership within a sport context. This program will use current cases and challenges in sport as the foundation of the leadership training ground. Participants will work both with their cohort and one-on-one with their instructor to identify their individual leadership strengths and opportunities, and to create a personal leadership development action plan.
