February 2022
From The Council

Every great yacht club has a strategic plan. But having a strategic plan is not the same as implementing one.

Think of a keelboat race team. The skipper/owner may have studied the courses, checked the weather and drawn out a brilliant plan for a strong start and fast clip around the racecourse. But if the helmsman standing at the wheel doesn’t know about the plan, or doesn’t understand the plan, it will be impossible to implement it. Worse yet is when the skipper changes the plan mid-course, doesn’t communicate effectively, and the boat ends up taking a flyer!

Strategic plans are essential to our clubs’ long-term success, and they tend to be a popular topic of discussion this time of year. If your club is undergoing these discussions, here are some helpful ICOYC Insights we hope you will reference:

Welcome Two New Council Clubs!

Coral Reef Yacht Club

Located in Coconut Grove on Biscayne Bay in Miami, Florida, Coral Reef Yacht Club is adjacent to one of the world’s greatest watersports playgrounds. Since 1955, the club has drawn people together over a shared love of boating. The clubhouse features a heated swimming pool and indoor and outdoor dining. As a boating epicenter, CRYC hosts several national and international competitions, has a thriving cruising and fishing community, and boasts a booming junior sailing program. They have been named a top 30 yacht club by the Platinum Clubs of America.

Monte Real Club de Yates

Founded in 1965 in the Batería del Cangrejo, Spain, the Monte Real Club de Yates has two guiding principles: encourage international nautical tourism and organize international regattas. They have hosted several large-scale regattas and in 1989 became the first Spanish sailing club to challenge for the America’s Cup; they have entered the Cup twice more since. Located in the heart of the seaside village of Baiona, MRCYB sits alongside a quiet harbor. Behind it, an ancient fortress stands between the Club and the open sea, the perfect location for on-water competition.

AYC's Chesapeake Cruise Postponed

Regretfully, the decision has been made to postpone the 2022 ICOYC Cruise. In correspondence with various ICOYC members outside of the United States, there is concern about making financial arrangements when the future of the pandemic is unclear. All registrants will have their registration fees refunded.

We are hoping to repeat this cruise at a future date based on the results of an upcoming ICOYC survey regarding dates and seasons. In this way, we can ensure that most will be able to participate in the cruise. Stay tuned!

2022 Americas Conference
