Diving into the 108 Portal: Building Game Prep Progressions
At the field with minimal equipment and need a progression to get your hitters ready to compete? Try this one out below!
Below are a few buckets that these drills cover in your preparation:
  • Staying Anchored
    • The open/closed 15 blend is done from an anchored position, creating feedback on how well the athlete can hold the ground during the swing. Stop swings and rapid swings also give athletes feedback on how well they can hold on to the ground.
  • Space
    • Open 15s and Cansecos help hitters create space in several dimensions. If you have hitters who constantly get their hands pinned and have a steep attack angle, try out Open 15s. If you have hitters who constantly get beat and never catch the ball out front, try out Cansecos.
  • Bat Path
    • Rapid swings create a time constraint that is crucial for feedback on bat path. If it's difficult to recover between swings, your bat probably isn't moving as efficiently as it should be.
  • Getting against the front side
    • If we can't get against the front side, direction, adjustability, and force transmission become compromised. Cansecos are a great way to exaggerate the feeling of getting against your front side.
Need one for pitchers, too? Give this one a try:
Below are a few buckets that these drills cover in your preparation:
  • Staying Anchored & Decel
    • The anchor and open 45 angles teach the lower half how to stabilize so the upper half can rotate ballistically and deliver the baseball. If the lower half can't stop and stabilize, upper half sequencing will be negatively impacted.
  • Space
    • Open 45s give throwers the ability to create counter rotation with their torso, giving the arm space and freedom to catch and unwind from deep. if working with can athlete that struggles with decel, you can switch up the angle and go closed.
  • Arm Path
    • Anchored throwing variations create opportunities to work on arm path by isolating the arm. With minimal lower half involvement, you can key in on certain aspects of arm path early on in catch play.
    • Athletic throwing variations are also a great tool for arm path because of the coordination demands. Sometimes the problem is the arm. Other times, we're seeing the problem at the arm because the body isn't creating leverage or capturing momentum.
  • Lower Half Patterning
    • Step backs can be a great feel for players who struggle with their forward move. Learning how to accept force on the back leg can have a positive influence on how you accept force with the front leg.
