Departmental Scholarships Applications Available

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences wants to give students some money!! To apply for the scholarships please go to the EES office and pick up an application from the front desk or the major's room. 

Only members of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences are eligible for the scholarships. We are sorry, but members of the Environmental Sciences Program are not eligible. 

Applications are due by Friday, March 18, 2022 at 4:00 pm.
Applications may be either dropped off at the Front Desk or emailed to Dr. Matyjasik (mmatyjasik@weber.edu).

Geoscience and Society Lectures

MME is a mineral exploration company based in South Ogden, Utah. 
Position offers experience that transfers into other careers in geology such as:  environmental, mining, regulatory, engineering, geophysics, and hydology.

Propel Scholarship

The Weber State Mathematics and Science Propel Project is pleased to announce applications for 2022-2023 Propel Scholarships.  This Scholarships project offers full cost of attendance, two-year scholarships to students finishing a STEM (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics) degree and completing coursework to secure a science or mathematics teaching endorsement.  In exchange for receiving this scholarship, scholars pledge to teach two years in a local high school needs district for each one year scholarship you receive.  As part of this scholarship, scholars will also be placed with exceptional master teachers in these local districts where you will learn about the art of teaching while completing yor WSU coursework.

Sustainability Leadership Scholarship

NEW $1,000-$5,000 Sustainability Leadership Scholarship
Thanks to the generous support of a local donor, the Jeanne A. Evenden Sustainability Leadership Scholarship is available to support junior, senior and graduate students who are enrolled full- or part-time in a field related to sustainability (e.g., Energy Engineering, Environmental Sciences or Studies, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Geography, Environment & Sustainability). Consideration will also be given to students enrolled in studies with an environmental/sustainability focus such as biology, botany, ecology, hydrology, journalism, natural resource management, political science, zoology or any other relevant field. 

Interested students should have completed the FAFSA form for next year and submitted a short personal essay regarding their sustainability interests and engagement. Awards of $1000-$5000 towards the 2022-23 academic year will be made for 1-5 students.  Full details on the criteria for this scholarship and the link to the submission form can be found hereThe deadline to apply is March 1st.

The 2022 Intermountain Sustainability Summit is coming

The 2022 Intermountain Sustainability Summit is coming March 16th-18th.
Our largest event of the year is almost here. Presenters from a wide range of disciplines will converge online to discuss, learn, and collaborate. Highlights include over 50 speakers including two keynotes, workshops, student poster contest, and sustainability-focused art. Registration is open and, since it is being held virtually, you can join, contribute, and learn from wherever you are!

Sick Care Package

The Weber Cares Pantry and the Done-in-a-Day team are looking to collect:  tissues, cough drops, sprite/ginger ale, saltines, soup, hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, chapstick, water bottles/ gatorade, hot and cold packs, ziplocks, etc.

Sustainability Research Awards

Every year the Sustainability Practices and Research Center (SPARC) recognizes exceptional Sustainability Research Projects that have been completed by students and faculty alike.  The recognition is accompanied by a cash award. 

For consideration, the application form and any supporting documents must be completed/submitted by April 1.  Questions?  Please contact the review committee chair, Dr. Gavin Roberts, gavinroberts@weber.edu, who serves on the Environmental Initiatives Committee.

Mineral of the Week -Gillulyite

Gillulyite is a rare mineral that was classified by our department's own Dr. Jim Wilson in 1991. This mineral was discovered in Mercur, UT. In this week's Mineral of the Week, Dr. Jim Wilson shares the story of this mineral's discovery and classification.
