ABE Massachusetts Newsletter | March 2022
The ABE Massachusetts Team wishes you a Happy International Pi Day!
We may not use ∏ in the lab that often, but we sure do love pie!
We're thinking about it,
so you should too

It's time to drop the temperature and start our annealing phase; we need to connect back together! The ABE Massachusetts Team is happy to announce that we are planning the 2022 ABE Teacher Recognition Event this spring. Details will soon follow as we secure a date and location. Don't worry, it is not gala-themed.

ABE Tech Corner: Lab 6 Culture
Last year, Essex Tech biotech student, Alexa Carr, worked on optimizing the expression of rfp in liquid culture for Lab 6. And did she optimize! Check out her online project portfolio and suggested lab considerations!

Brandeis Student Request
Biology in Powers of 10

My name is Roshni and I am a sophomore at Brandeis University studying Neuroscience. I am interested in the development of science education at the high school level, particularly in the ways quantitative reasoning and problem solving can be integrated into biology classes.

To this end, I am working on an independent educational research project under the mentorship of Melissa Kosinski-Collins who is a Professor of Biology at Brandeis with an expertise in science education research and outreach.

I am creating a series of order of magnitude estimation problems concerning questions in cellular biology, biochemistry, ecology, and anatomy/physiology with teacher notes. Teachers can use the videos I make as they teach the relevant unit in order to introduce quantitative reasoning into existing curricular goals.

I am looking for biology teachers or professors who are interested in piloting my quantitative biology activities. Gaining teacher input is invaluable to me in order to understand how to fine-tune my educational resource.

If you are interested in collaborating or learning more about the project, please email me at roshniray@brandeis.edu
