What We Need This Week?

We need small carriers. When a fostered cat has kittens, we always provide a separate carrier for the kittens as they will each need one for their spay/neuter date.

We also need your old sneakers! Read on.

We can turn your old sneakers into kitten food! It’s magical! Just drop your used sneakers off in the designated box on the porch at 16125 Zagros Way in Bee Cave and we’ll get them shipped out to Got Sneakers. They’ll send us a check. We’ll buy kitten food! Magic!

Paired sneakers only. Please tie laces together to keep pairs together. Please do not drop off any non-athletic footwear including but not limited to dress shoes, heels, boots, sandals, slip-ons, water socks, wedges, etc.

Update on George’s Cats

We are working through vetting the seven cats we took from George, a man whose travel trailer burned down on February 23. We have scheduled those most in need of surgery first. Most of these cats need dental work.

We’ve checked everyone for an ear tip, denoting that the cat has been spayed/neutered. Blue Boy, a young cat, was ear-tipped, extremely feral, and would reach out to scratch anyone who went by his cage. We have returned him to his familiar territory. A lady who lives across the street feeds feral cats, and will feed anyone released back.
Hutch is very timid yet seems to be a sweet cat.
Hutch is feral also, and has an ear tip. Unlike Blue Boy, Hutch is timid. We think Hutch is female, but we’re not sure. We would like to get her/his vaccinations up to date and check the status of her/his mouth before release.

Spooky is a tortoiseshell so we know she’s female. She has an ear tip so we know she’s spayed. She lets staff members pet her. She has yet to visit a vet. When she does,  she will have a full exam and vaccination update.

Tiger is timidly coming out of his hidey-hole for a quick look around while a staff member is present. He has an ear tip, and he will have his exam and vet visit soon.

Heather Bud, a beautiful, ear-tipped, 14-year-old, dilute tortoiseshell with white feet, has gone to a home to be fostered. Heather Bud is so happy to be an inside cat with someone who wants to pet and cuddle her like her foster mom, Samantha, does. We’re hoping Samantha falls in love.

Heather Bud, Tiger, and Spooky were all in the travel trailer when it ignited. We found Heather Bud within an hour and she let us put her in a carrier. She cried and cried until I put her in the car and cranked up the heater. The warmer it got, the less she cried.

Spooky and Tiger were upset by the fire and subsequent loss of their home. George sat with them until he could put Tiger in a carrier, but Spooky, living up to her name, had to be trapped.
Linus will need extensive work from dental care to ear issues.
Linus needs extensive work. His dental cleaning and extraction is scheduled for this week. We will let him recover from that before addressing his ear issues, which will need either laser treatment or surgery. For the time being, he is letting us treat his ears medically. He has no ear tip, so when he is anesthetized for his dental work, we will ask the vet to neuter him if it’s not been done.

Bob, a.k.a. Bitey Bob, has one ear folder over, probably from an old infection. Our lead vet tech, Christina, says he has the worst mouth issues she has ever seen! He is scheduled to have his teeth cleaned, and probably most of them removed, on Thursday, 3/17. He also sneezes frequently and sprays snot—we talk like that a lot here—when he does. He probably has an upper respiratory infection which won’t be resolved until after his dental work, as it is probably related to the sorry state of his dentition. The vet will neuter him, if necessary, when he is anesthetized for his dental.

A $5,000 in-kind grant we received from one of our veterinary offices will defray most of the costs of the above work. We are very grateful for this gift!

Bradley

Bradley came to Thundering Paws from Kerrville Pets Alive. He loves people and will be available for adoption soon!
Bradley was in a municipal shelter in Kerrville which has yet to achieve no-kill status. Estimated to be about three years old, his chances of coming out of there alive were doubtful. Kerrville Pets Alive (KPA) asked us if we could take him. Many of our fosters have asked for a break, so we had to say no.

Tracy, one of our board members, needed a cat who is dog friendly. Shelly of KPA trotted a cat-friendly dog by Bradley’s cage, and he showed no reaction. Tracy agreed to try Bradley.

An old hand at introducing cats and dogs, Tracy offered Bradley her smallest, most laid back dog. Bradley sprang at the dog with claws and teeth! Fortunately, Tracy intervened quickly and the pup was unscathed, but Bradley failed the test and came to Thundering Paws.

Bradley will be at the spay/neuter clinic the day you receive this issue of Mewsings, and will be ready for adoption soon. Apparently he doesn’t like dogs, but he loves people. He saw a vet at KPA, and was found to be healthy. His fosters have other cats, so he will be tried with cats soon. This information will be on his listing later this week.
