12 years ago today, sisters Christie and Michelle founded Karma Cat + Zen Dog Rescue Society. Growing up, they spent hours talking about how they wanted to do something to help animals. Fast forward to 2009, they took a week-long workshop at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary to learn how to start their own sanctuary. They had no solid plans for starting an animal rescue at the time, but they figured they would gather as much information as possible until they were ready (talk about being driven!). Then, in 2010, Christie helped her neighbor TNR 19 feral cats that he had been caring for in his backyard. Christie was fortunate enough to get in contact with two amazing women, Janet and Gilda, who taught her how to TNR the adult cats and helped her get the kittens adopted. Gilda played a huge role in helping to develop Karma Cat + Zen Dog, guiding many of the protocols that we use to this day.
Today, we not only celebrate the anniversary of Karma Cat + Zen Dog, but we also celebrate the people who have helped shape it into what it is today. In the last 12 years, Karma Cat + Zen Dog has grown from a small operation to a beautifully structured organization with its very own adoption center in Milltown and over 150 volunteers! Considering that Karma Cat + Zen Dog got its start through TNR, it seems fitting that we celebrate this anniversary by raising funds for this month’s Snip + Chip event. Our TNR program is community-based and, with compassion and humanity, we work side-by-side with our friends in the community so they can accomplish their TNR goals.
