Conclusions results research programme
The Dutch government and military leadership deliberately condoned the systematic and widespread use of extreme violence by the Dutch armed forces in the war against the Republic of Indonesia. First five publications of the research results available online
The first five Dutch publications resulting from the research programme, Over de grens, Sporen van betekenis, Een kwaad geweten, Van Rij en Stam and Diplomatie en geweld, are now available to read for free (open access). The English translation of Over de grens, Beyond the Pale, is also available. Read more.
32 children in Aruba participate in Island(er)s at the Helm school activity
Students of ages 8 to 12 years old in Aruba gathered at Ayo to visit the pictograph site with archaeologist and team member Harold Kelly. Together, they explored the Ayo Rock formation, got a tour of the pictographs and participated in an engaging discussion about heritage and climate change and how climate challenges affect their daily lives. Presentation results Lasalaga Project
The Lasalaga Project brings the story of Lasalaga, a fierce warrior and leader, raised on Bali & Sulawesi and one of the first rulers to embrace Islam, to new audiences. Kathryn Wellen and Louie Buana engaged the painter I Made Sesangka Laksana to depict the story using a Balinese style known as Kamasan. The painting was used to illustrate a children’s book to bring this story to the youngest generation as well as their caregivers and teachers. Additionally, two videos were made, a documentary about the project and a children’s video. More.
The making of Painting Exile
In the framework of the Atelier KITLV program, KITLV guest researcher Kerstin Winking shared a photo story about the making of Painting Exile via KITLV’s Instagram. Painting Exile is a film by Dev Benegal and Kerstin Winking about an encounter with the Burmese Canadian painter Sawangwongse Yawnghwe in his studio in Zutphen, The Netherlands. More.

Black Man in the Netherlands; An Afro-Antillean Anthropology
Simultaneously memoir and astute exploration, Black Man in the Netherlands charts Francio Guadeloupe’s coming of age and adulthood in a Dutch world and movingly makes a global contribution to the understanding of anti-Black racism. Guadeloupe identifies the intersections among urban popular culture, racism, and multiculturalism in youth culture in the Netherlands and the wider Dutch Kingdom. More.
Een eervol bestaan
In 1938 riep een poster op om te tekenen voor het KNIL, er werd een 'eervol bestaan' beloofd. Daarmee begint de inleiding op deze geschiedenis van het KNIL door Vilan van de Loo (fellow bij het KITLV). Hoe eervol was het, en was was de functie van imperialistische helden in het koloniaal systeem? Het boek vertelt de ontwikkeling van het KNIL in beeld en in een grote collectie contemporaine documenten: brieven, pamfletten, dagboeken, nota's, liedjes, krantenartikelen enzovoort. Vaste onderwerpen zijn onder meer de samenstelling van het KNIL, de visie op de kolonisatie, de aanwezigheid van vrouwen, en vernieuwingen zoals de introductie van de fiets in het leger en de opkomst van de militaire luchtvaart. Het laatste hoofdstuk geeft aandacht aan de herinneringscultuur van het KNIL. Meer.
Het Nederlandse militaire optreden tijdens de dekolonisatieoorlog
In februari verscheen het boek Zoeken, aangrijpen en vernietigen! Het Nederlandse militaire optreden in Indonesië, 1945-1949 van Christiaan Harinck. Harinck deed zijn promotieonderzoek naar het Nederlandse militaire optreden tijdens de dekolonisatieoorlog in Indonesië aan het KITLV en promoveerde in 2021 aan de Universiteit Leiden. Meer.

Merdeka in de media Van het boek Merdeka; De strijd om de Indonesische onafhankelijkheid en de ongewisse opkomst van de Republiek 1945-1950 van Henk Schulte Nordholt en Harry Poeze verschenen recensies door Frank Vermeulen in het NRCen door Herman Keppy in het Indies Tijdschrift. Ook werd er aandacht besteed aan Merdeka in een uitzending van Nieuwsweekend (vanaf minuut 46.50).
NU.nl: Harry Poeze over herkomst geroofde eigendommen in tentoonstelling Revolusi! Nederland heeft tijdens de Indonesische onafhankelijkheidsoorlog duizenden persoonlijke eigendommen van Indonesiërs in beslag genomen en in het geheim verscheept naar het Nationaal Archief. Een aantal van die objecten zijn te zien in de omstreden tentoonstelling Revolusi!in het Rijksmuseum.KITLV gastonderzoeker Harry Poeze achterhaalde van een aantal van die objecten de naam van de eigenaar. Breaking out of the virtual: Diving into Marine Protected Area governance in the Dutch Caribbean By Yvonne Kunz. Tropical coasts are being faced by unprecedented sustainability challenges, with climate change posing immediate threats. Understanding the consequences of climate change and how to adapt governance approaches in response to it requires a knowledge of the ecological and political context, of the stakeholders involved and of the power dynamics at play. To dive into these topics, a team of researchers embarked on a field trip to the Caribbean. More.

In connection with the EuroSEAS conference in Paris-Aubervilliers from 28 June – 2 July 2022, EuroSEAS organizes, in cooperation with the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), a masterclass for PhD students from European universities who work on Southeast Asia in the field of the Humanities and Social Sciences. Philippus Corts Fonds: toekenningen eerste subsidieronde (also in English)
In de eerste subsidieronde van het Philippus Corts Fonds (PCF) zijn twee aanvragen gehonoreerd. Het PCF heeft als taakstelling: het preserveren en toegankelijk maken van originele archiefbronnen in Indonesië en Nederland die betrekking hebben op de gedeelde geschiedenis van deze twee gebieden in de periode 1602 t/m 1949, met speciale aandacht voor de periode van de VOC en WOII in Azië.
