Ukraine Relief - 2

Kevin and Cindy Austin, Global Partners missionaries to the Czech Republic recently shared this report about their involvement in aiding the Ukrainian refugees.
Here are some things happening locally through the Wesleyan church in the Czech Republic that I am aware of.

In Brno, I know they have opened up the Majak Ministry Center and are housing a single moms with their children. The last report I had heard was that there were two moms and infants staying there. Majak is directly connected with the WERF (Wesleyan Emergency Relief Fund) donation site allowing them to receive gifts to assist the needs of the Evacuees. 100% will go to the needs of the Ukrainians. I know that Majak has been in contact with the Ukrainian Church in Brno as well as several other churches trying to pull resources and compare information so that they are more able to better assist the influx of evacuees. We’ve also teamed up with WOL (Word of Life) in a nearby city Cerna Hora. WOL has a retreat center that normally is used for English Camps and occasional retreats. However, they’ve opened their doors to hosting families there for about a week while they get more permanent living opportunities. Some of our staff from Majak have gone to help out there, (cooking, cleaning rooms, activities with children). As many as nearly 60 people have been at the camp at one time. They’ve had 3 rotations of refugees to this point. Cindy and I were a part of churches and families here in Poděbrady (about 120mi away), gathering clothing and toiletries. Because we have a large vehicle (7 passenger van) I had the privilege of driving the collection of goods to WOL. I’ll include a picture of the loaded vehicle. I was also able to deliver a van load of medical needs and similar items to a loading dock that the Ukrainian church had secured through the help of the Ukrainian Embassy (located in Brno).

I cannot share photos of the people themselves for security purposes.

More specifically here in Poděbrady, our local Wesleyan Church has been collecting items for Ukrainian evacuees living in the area. I was able to deliver some medical supplies to one of the gathering locations. Cindy and I have also had the honor and privilege of hosting 9 Ukrainians in transit. One group of 6 ( A mom, 2 children; A mom and one child and a future daughter-in-law). They were two moms and 2 adult children and 2 younger children. The two adult children were both engaged to be married. One of the fiancés was back in Ukraine fighting. The all lived in the same city and were good friends. Their city was overtaken early in the war by Russian troops.

A second group of 2 women (one a mom with her teenage son) stayed with us while in transit to other locations. They came from different locations and didn’t know each other before they met at the train station in Prague. They stayed with us for 4 nights while the previous group of 6 stayed 2 nights. Today we just opened our home to a mom and 3 children (don’t know more that that at the moment). They arrive in about 30min. We do know they will be living with us for 2 weeks.

Finally, the pastor of the Wesleyan Church (Remedy International Church) has been very instrumental in connecting those needing housing with those who have available space. He spent 3 days on the road right at the outset of the war. He went to two border towns in Slovakia-Ukraine and then visited another border town in Poland-Ukraine. He gathered information and helped with suggestions and sharing his knowledge and insights. Then he brought back 6 with him dropping off some in Brno and then the others in Prague. He continues to assist in the first placement of the Ukrainian Evacuees.
