With all the kids at home for spring break, our week flew by in a flurry of activities one of which was the arrival of our first batch of baby chicks.
We raise meat chickens from March through November so this kicks off our 2022 growing season.
A few interesting facts about chickens we've learned since adding chickens to the farm last summer:
💰 3-day-old chicks are purchased from a local hatchery where they each cost less than a cup of fancy Starbucks coffee
⚖ In the 50-60 days it takes to grow a chicken each bird will consume about 13 lb of feed.
☀ Baby chicks need a constant heat source (heat lamps) until 4 weeks old when they're larger with mature feathers.
🐤 You can't tell male and females apart until they are 4-5 weeks old.
You may have noticed the Farm Store's chicken section looking rather sparse as we await the first harvest of the year, which should come in early May.
