March 2022
Karzo welcomes you to our March Business and Logistics Newsletter. The World Food Programme’s Market Price Update for Myanmar highlights month-on-month prices of key commodities and shortages of products as well as ongoing political constraints. Despite overall resilience, the private sector is again asked what role it needs to play alongside ongoing high profile exits on which we have reported previously. With the onset of hot season, the hindrance to investment in the energy sector comes to bear, although less so for the MoEE and more for the end consumer. Exacerbated by Russia’s actions, FX and fuel price hikes have led to flux across all sectors, logistics being no exception. Diesel rose 46% in just 10 days, a perfect storm of both oil prices and weakness in the MMK. Corn season is in full flow, as is corresponding border trade with China and Thailand as initiatives and tax-exemptions finally deliver some good news. Local general transportation sees high demand due to seasonal cargo loads to the ports and internally. Finally, commentators are asking whether the global challenges in supply chain and shipping might be seeing some light at the end of the tunnel. These stories and more can be found below.
