In mid-2017, while on submission for THE DEVOURING GRAY, I had an idea for a book. I didn’t know much about it yet, only that it would involve two girls and a spooky ocean, and that whoever they were, they would spend a summer untangling something horrifying while they fell in love.
Their names came next—Evelyn and Mina, one with a voice that crackled and flared and fought, the other with a voice that felt like treading across increasingly thinner ice, each movement closer and closer to disturbing something monumental.
Then came the murder and the ghosts, hand in hand, and then suddenly it was way more than an idea. It was a book that would go on to re-shape itself a half dozen times over the coming years, until at last the words The End actually felt right.
That book is THE DROWNING SUMMER, and as of today, it’s finally out in the world. I’m exhausted and nervous and incredibly happy that readers can finally meet Evelyn and Mina in the wild! Thank you so much to everyone who’s supported this book (and me) on its journey to publication.
