What is CalTeach?

CalTeach is a minor program for undergraduates interested in K-12 STEM education. Our courses cover pedagogy, history and sociocultural influences in STEM education, and more.

If you complete the minor, you are eligible to apply for the CalTeach credential program, in which you can earn a preliminary single-subject CA teaching credential in a STEM subject as an undergraduate.

Note: You do NOT need to be a STEM major to complete the minor. If you are a non-STEM Major interested in applying to the credential program see Geral Lowe, Student Services Coordinator (there is a slightly different application process).

EDSTEM 82/ 82T: Introduction Course

Every fall, spring, and summer, CalTeach offers the introductory course

  • EDSTEM 82: Integrated K-8 Science and Math Teaching.
  • We also now offer EDSTEM 82T: K-12 Tutoring in Science and Mathematics. Either of these two should be the first course you take with CalTeach.
  • EDSTEM 82T will be in person instruction this summer.

CalTeach Course Pathway

We have student who start the program in all different times of their undergraduate years at Berkeley. If you are concerned about being able to fit the minor into your remaining time at Cal, Peer Advisors are always happy to help walk through an individualized plan with you. Otherwise, you can also check out the Course Pathways page on our website.

Field Placement Information

In 4 of the CalTeach courses, you will be placed in a local elementary, middle, or high school STEM classroom. Usually, as you move along the CalTeach course pathway, your placement will move further out to other nearby cities in the Bay Area. Learn more here!

Scholarships, Summer Internships, Classroom-Based Externships

CalTeach offers scholarships year-round for our students - please check out the Scholarships page on our website.

We also offer courses in the summer, the Summer Research Institute (a 8-week research program that fulfills one of our minor course requirements), and Summer STEM Beyond Internships (working with Bay Area organizations and K-12 students).

If you would like to find out more about these opportunities, contact CalTeach Peer Advisors (calteach_peers@berkeley.edu) or make an appointment!
