It's time to Speak Up!!
Hello !

The third IPCC report is out, with its dictum “It’s now or never, if we want to limit global warming to 1.5C." Mother Earth needs you to speak up about climate solutions now!

Consider talking to friends, writing to the paper, getting loud on social media, contacting Members of Congress, or helping with a new Ad Campaign!
Check out all these opportunities in this month's newsletter.

Research shows that Mary Poppins was right, a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down when we approach people about climate. Sometimes that sugar might be humor, as we attempted in our #100Snowmen Challenge last month, music, art, or simply having a trusted messenger (you) offer an effective solution that doesn't hurt our pocketbooks (#carboncashback)

So here's something you can do right now. Click on the fun pictures/video above, like them, write a comment, and share it on facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. Including the hastag #bipartisanclimate or #grassrootsclimate will take them to a CCL webpage. It's not exactly like talking to friends in person, but it can help get the message out to people you know, and amplify our Montana CCL media channels.

You can also think of social media as a tool, like writing a letter to Congress or marching in the street, because your can direct your message to elected officials by including their handle in the message, e.g., the President's handle is @POTUS. Please be respectful - remember the sugar.

Novice? Here's a CCL Community training on how to get started with social media.

Social Media regular? Take advantage of the easy weekly suggested posts in the Social Media Toolkit. It  shares interesting articles or quotes by influential people.

Got a few minutes a week? Join our statewide Social Media team

If 100 of you like/share the video and the photos, our dynamite MT social media team will make sure our members of Congress see it!

Let's have an Active Earth Month!

Special Action
Putin's invasion of Ukraine has been a wake up call on the national security threats of using fossil fuels. Russia funded 39% of its budget from fossils fuel exports in 2019. Fossil fuel money is funding this war. Dependence on fossil fuels from Russia revealed Europe's Achille's heel, leaving them (and other countries) with hard choices in order to take effective action against Russia. And in the US, despite being the largest producer of fossil fuels, we are nevertheless chained to a volatile global market, whose current shortages are hiking our prices.

Calls to “drill, drill, drill” will not change this basic equation, and would lock us into a path of unmitigated climate disruption.

Please email President Biden and our Congressional delegation to let them know there is support from their constituents for prioritizing clean energy as a way to avoid national security threats and achieve real energy independence, clean air, and reduce the power of autocrats and dictators. Use this easy take action button.

CCL Monthly Call and Policy Update

April Monthly Speaker: Keishaa Austin, Head of Engagement and Partnerships at Rewiring America
Saturday April 9th, 11AM MDT

#ElectrifyEverthing is the hot hashtag of late, especially in light of the invasion of Ukraine, the sanctions against Russia and the need to end our fossil fuel dependency. Joining us this month is Keishaa Austin from Rewiring America, which is working to launch a movement to electrify everything, starting with our nation's 121 million households. Their latest policy brief, the Electrify for Peace Policy Plan, calls for ramping up American capacity to manufacture and install heat pumps in Europe and the U.S.

Keep Congress focused on a healthy climate
Together we've pushed climate change to the top of the priorities in Washington, DC. And, we'll keep showing up until Congress passes strong climate policies like a price on carbon and we see declining emissions in America. This year's conference coincides with CCL's international week of action, including virtual lobby meetings across the world.

At the 3rd annual Climate Conference hosted by Montana State student members of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Dr. Ben Poulter, gave a sobering talk. A former MSU professor who has worked at the Goddard Space Center/NASA since 2016, Poulter said we have a 67% chance that we will overshoot our 2030 goal to reduce carbon emissions by 50%. The good news is, our actions today can change that course, and as soon as we stop burning fossil fuels altogether, temperatures will stabilize. He asked for people to speak up!
In a World on Fire, Stop Buring Things, by Bill McKibben in the New Yorker March 18, 2022
McKibben's talk about university divestment on April 6th at MSU was recorded in a webinar hosted by the MSU Campus Climate Coalition and the MSU Leadership Institute.

Collective Illusions  Conformity, Complicity, and the Science of Why We Make Bad Decisions, by Todd Rose.  Todd was a guest on episode 187 Feb.11, 2022 of the The Dispatch podcast. The author shares how easy it is for communities to go along with perceptions about what you think your neighbors think rather than what your neighbors really think. He offers ways that we can bridge the inference gap to transform ourselves and society.  One thing he repeatedly recommends is to speak up.
