the word: from your vestry
by Kieran Cannistra, vestry clerk

Dear St. David of Walesers,

On Sunday, March 20, vestry met and, after opening in prayer, accepting this month’s reports, and approving last month’s minutes, discussed the following:

We began with old business: Our annual parochial report (“an annual insight into the life, ministry, finances, and membership of The Episcopal Church”) was submitted to the Diocese. We approved Ned Hayes, Anne Parks, and Kit Walling as our 2022 Convention delegates, with Al Burns as alternate. We discussed two grants we plan to submit to help us develop programming for our (brand spanking new) kitchen: An Episcopal Bishop of Oregon Foundation (EBOF) grant, and an Oregon Community Foundation (OCF) grant. If anyone out there in eNotes land has experience reviewing or writing grants, please email me.

Treasurer Karen Dollar reported that money remains on track for the year. Finance Team Lead Madeline Moore and Building Improvement Implementation Team Lead Margaret McCue updated vestry on electrical work that’s been done on the building, so far … and asked vestry to approve up to $12k more to get it done. The details of the work and request are included in the drafted meeting minutes, in case you’d like to review the details, but (SPOILER WARNING!) vestry approved the request.

Cleo Mozena, our mighty children’s ministry coordinator, is planning an Easter egg hunt for our littles on Easter Sunday. The vestry is wildly enthusiastic about this idea, as we’re certain you must be. Godly Play is chugging right along in person each Sunday, but Cleo reported that two things are needed to get the nursery back in action: A reliable caretaker who is over the age of 21, and a clean space in the church. If you know of a potential caretaker or are willing to help prepare a space, please email Cleo.

We spent the majority of the meeting discussing the reboot of our ministry teams, which were one of the outcomes of the strategic plan from a few years back and designed to give parishioners ownership of the work of the church. Several teams have leads who will continue their work: New leads have been identified for two teams, both of which are gearing back up to welcome new members: Finally, Wendy Oliver has agreed to serve as lead for our newest team: Technology & Communications.

If you (yes, you) are interested in serving on any of the above teams, please contact the lead or email me. And don’t sleep on these vestry updates in future eNotes; more teams will come back online in coming months. (For example, we’re looking for someone willing to lead the Pastoral Care team.)

Finally, Aaron led us in a closing prayer.

As a reminder: Reach AJ at aj@saintdavidpdx.org for issues related to liturgy and services, and all members of the vestry at stdavidpdx-vestry@googlegroups.com for other issues. Our vestry meetings are open to all; if you're interested in attending, we next meet on Sunday, 10 April at 1pm. Not into meetings? All vestry meeting minutes and officer reports are found here.

Thank you for allowing us to serve this church (and you).

With love,
Kieran Cannistra, vestry clerk (and other members of your vestry: Preston Abbott, Cass Cole, Aaron Epperson, Ned Hayes, Ryan Hill, Rachel Klein, Anne Parks, and Kit Walling)

Loving Our Indigenous Neighbors
Join us on Tuesday, March 29th from 2-3:30pm for a presentation by  special guest, Shaneequa Brokenleg. In January of 2020, Brokenleg joined the presiding bishop’s staff in the Office of Reconciliation, Justice, and Creation Care as the Staff Officer for Racial Reconciliation. When not in the office, she is the voice of the podcast Prophetic Voices: Preaching and Teaching Beloved Community. Rev. AJ met her through their work as part of the standing committee of TransEpiscopal, an organization that supports trans and non-binary persons in the Episcopal Church, and speaks out about trans justice issues. Shaneequa has graciously agreed to lead a presentation on Indigenous culture from her perspective. All are welcome!

Notes from the Building Improvement Implementation Team

Work continues mostly behind the scenes on several areas of building improvement. We're happy to let you know two items in particular.

#1 The city is actively reviewing the additional documentation and plans it requested for our kitchen support beam permit application.

#2 Our contractor has installed the new kitchen window (another long supply-chain wait), which replaces our old poorly functioning, energy inefficient, dilapidated window.

If you would like more details about the Building Improvement Implementation Team’s work, please contact team leader, Margaret McCue at margaretpdx8@gmail.com.
