Dear People of Hope,
Last week, many of us gathered for Shrove Tuesday pancakes, in person at Hope! Others attended Alex's doctoral piano recital to hear impressive music by Tchaikovsky. We were pleased to see Derek, Hope's former musician, also there. Still others, both long-timers and newcomers, gathered for Ash Wednesday services, outside at noon and inside in the evening. Then on Sunday, we met for worship, and it was warm enough to have coffee hour outside.
We are into the season of Lent now, with opportunities for worship and study listed below.
We also continue our property discernment process, with a large-group zoom meeting tomorrow/Wednesday (zoom info below). At this meeting, we'll look at the specific language of a possible vote on how to move forward. We'll also discuss the voting practices, ensuring every member who wants to vote will be able to. No vote is scheduled, yet. We want to share as much information as possible beforehand.

In church, we talk about God’s will, God’s plan, following God’s call, being faithful to the mission, and so on. How we determine these is through the process of discernment. The word process is very important because discernment is different from decision-making. Notice that God is part of these phrases. God is also part of the discernment process. Discernment involves creating space in our hearths, minds and souls for God. It involves being open to God and God’s direction. And God will fill that space. Join these Wednesday prayers and conversations to explore more.

Our morning scripture will come from the Women’s Lectionary for the Whole Church, crafted by the Rev. Dr. Wil Gafney. When we used this lectionary in Advent, we were enriched by the variety of stories.

6:30pm holy meal and foot washing at home, a worship service only on zoom Watch for instructions for how to prepare your home for this special service. When we hosted this service throughout COVID, people found it incredibly meaningful to worship from home and see each other’s faces. Even with the opportunity to gather in person this year, we expect there will be something holy about worshiping from home. Same worship zoom link.

Membership is a way to say, "This is the place where I connect with God's people." Some people join a new church immediately upon moving to a new area; some people worship at a place for years and never officially join. Both are fine. Anyone can fully participate at Hope, through worship, baptisms, weddings and funerals. Members are eligible to serve on council and vote in congregational meetings.
Hope will welcome new members on Sunday, March 27. To prepare for this and build our community, everyone is invited to a mini-retreat on Saturday March 26, 3-5pm. You may come in-person at Hope or join by zoom. We’ll spend time getting to know each other, sharing some of our spiritual stories, and sharing scripture together. Talk to Pastor Julie for more information.
