March 2022

Message from ME&A's President and CEO

International Women’s Day is a day of remembrance. Today, March 8, 2022, all women in the world get together to honor those that came before us to fight for equality and justice for women. We commemorate our grandmothers, mothers, and sisters of all races, ethnic groups, and countries who joined together since the turn of the 20th century to fight for the right to vote, pay equality, equal opportunities, better work conditions, and the right to be treated equally in all aspects of our society. Today we remember all those brave women who came before us who helped us be the women we are today – committed to helping the next generations of women by empowering them, uplifting them, and supporting them. Together we will continue our mission toward a world that is equitable, inclusive, and free from discrimination with the field leveled for all women moving forward. We at ME&A, a woman-owned firm, celebrate all of you and yours and the role of women in international development.

Bangladesh Assessment Examines Communities Impacted by Rohingya Crisis

Investments USAID/Bangladesh made in two communities already facing poor development conditions before hosting hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees is the focus of an ME&A assessment under the USAID Bangladesh Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (BMEL) Activity. Since 2017, more than 700,000 Rohingya refugees have fled violence in Burma’s Rakhine State to settle in Bangladesh, particularly the Cox’s Bazar and Bandarban districts. The assessment’s purpose is to review the Mission’s Rohingya Project and implementation mechanisms to determine how it can strategically invest/manage resources to better achieve its objectives and inform current and future interventions in the two communities. Remembering ME&A's Work in Kharkiv, Ukraine, 20 Years Ago

By Thomas C. England
ME&A has never forgotten our work in Ukraine 20 years ago when our then small firm was selected to implement the “Kharkiv Initiative” project for USAID. Today, we see Kharkiv being systematically and brutally destroyed along with much of the rest of Ukraine by the Russian military. We can only hope that our friends in Kharkiv remain safe, the violence and destruction is quickly stopped, and Ukraine survives. If and when it does, it will need massive immediate and long-term economic support along with humanitarian aid for millions. Something like what we did in Kharkiv 20 years ago will be a good place to start. Read More

Tajikistan Safe Drinking Water Project – A Retrospective

By Duane Beard
Looking back, it is nearly a decade since ME&A completed the highly successful Tajikistan Safe Drinking Water Project. Despite the significant dual challenges imposed by resource limitations and the difficult Tajikistan operating environment, the project met or exceeded virtually all critical indicator targets set out by the USAID Mission. Between October 2009 and September 2012, we helped provide more than 110,000 rural villagers across Tajikistan with safe, dependable, and sustainable potable water supplies. We also contributed to significant reductions in the incidence of water-borne diseases among the target populations, especially children.

As I look back on my time in Tajikistan, the project clearly showed that with sufficient donor resources and efficient project management, it is possible to make substantial progress in achieving the key objectives of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) in Tajikistan of increasing access to drinking water. Read More

ASPIRED Celebrates Rehabilitation of Drinking Water System for Third Armenian Village

The completion of a newly built pumping station and water supply network in the village of Sardarapat, Armenia, was celebrated by residents and other guests from USAID and the Armenian government. Large-scale improvements to the community’s water infrastructure were accomplished through the USAID Advanced Science and Partnerships for Integrated Resource Development (ASPIRED) Project‘s collaboration with the village community.

These improvements mean every member of the community can access 24-hour water supply, which is vital for the well-being and health of villagers, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Before the rehabilitation, no capital improvements had been made on the village’s water supply network for decades. Read More
